So like I mentioned in a few other threads, I've been having some problems with my Tavor. So i decided to start a new thread to simplify and group my findings.

Since I'm not a reloader I went on a shopping spree and picked up all the possible combinations of .223 ammo I could find in the greater Vancouver area this morning.
I'm going to shoot 5 shot groups benchrest with improvised sandbags and post my findings when I head to the range on Friday.
I'll take my time and try my very best with my shots.

AE black box 55 grain 3240fps
Winchester white box 55 grain 3240fps
Hornady VMAX 55 grain 3240fsp
Hornady zombie max 55 grain 3240fps
Winchester PDX1 defender 60 grain 2750fps
Fusion 62 grain 3000fps
Winchester 64 grain powerpoint 3020fps
Hornady 75 grain bthp 2790fps
Fed sierra match king bthp 77 grain 2720 FPS

I will probably continue this experiment as I pick up different ammo in .223 in the coming weeks.
 
You might want to swap out the Elcan during the test. I took mine off in favor of a scope with more magnification for load development and testing.
Once I find the right load I'll put the Specter back on.
Makes it easier to make nice groups with the magnification and fine crosshairs.

Hopefully you have a chronograph as well, I never get what the box claims. They usually use a 24 inch barrel unless specified different.

Give us four groups of five rounds on the same piece of paper please. Four different points of aim of course.
That'll give you a very solid statistical sampling of how the rifle shoots with it.
 
Ill try to be as consistent as possible with my trigger pull as well, since that would fack things up royally if im different with pull on each shot, this is going to be tricky.
 
Yes, 1/7 twist stabilizes heavier, I am interested in how much difference it makes. Usually it's harder to find anything other than 55 grain.
Especially interested in how the 64 grain Winchester does. Must be a snappy round.
 
I'd recommend starting with a clean bore (not spotless) and clean (just a quick wipe out) between shooting different types of ammo as the switch from single to double / ball to extruded powders will skew the results.

Yep i'll run a few patches down the barreland i'll quickly wipe the bolt assembly carrier piston group thingy.
 
I reloaded 50 rds of 68gr BTHP Hornady from 23.5gr to 25gr using Hogdon H335 and the results were just terrible. At 25gr I couldn't hit my 6 inch target at 100, at 24gr 3 out of 5 rds hit the target at 5 inch spread. Best was the 23.5gr which measured just under 3 inches. Will be back again next week to try 23.5gr to 22gr of H335.
Best result for me was my regular 55gr Hornady FMJBT/Cannelure 25.3gr H335 reloads, 2-3moa at 100m.
At 50m it was hitting around 1.5inch. Will pos some pics later. At one point I was ready to throw the darn rifle, I then have Randy who is a RO at Poco shoot the rifle and he hit the gong once out of 5 shots standing up. Also made him shoot it at 50m and he average out around 1.5 inch. So go figure.
 
Hey Mike is this coming Friday your heading to the range? Let me know I have some S&B 5.56 ammo and some reloads you can add to your test.

Yah i know Randy, my wife was hitting the gong one out of 5 as well with the 55 grain but she couldn't figure out what was happening, she was telling me trigger, position, hold and breathing as well as point of aim were the same but i was spotting the rounds hitting all over the place about a 3 feet radius!

Give Varget or CFE223 a try, I'm not using it in a Tavor but it shoots well in all the .223's I've run it in.

And then frustrations started at 100m... Also my trigger finger was tired after 50 rds. Will try again this weekend. Testing was done last Thursday during a downpour.
