I have one of the 1st gen Tavors from first canammo imports , it came with a meprolight optic mounted on the barrel that i replaced with a aimpoint using a aftermarket rail . My rifle has 5000+ rounds , lots of cheap norinco bulk and such , i noticed the other day at the range when i bench rested the rifle the accuracy was really junk compared to the past so i began to inspect the rifle ,optic mount ect for issues and found there is a ring in the bore !? not sure how this happened ? norinco crap ammo maybe? snow or ice in the bore? I have seen this happen in .22lr guns with squib loads , but i would have noticed a squib in a .223 !? Now my question about barrel replacement , im guessing all the barrels are different between GENs because the newer flatops rifles must have a different setup for the mounting of the rail , where would be the best place to find the barrel i need?

North sylva, they are the importer for current Tavors. They have lots of spare parts, but can am barrels, probably not... Give them a call and specifically ask to talk to Jon, he is top notch to deal with and talk too. He is the top guy there and in my experiences the only guy to deal with at north sylva when you want a response from them.

You could have a competent Gunsmith like Ian at Herron Arms build you a new quality barrel from a blank. Its his specialty and I've never heard a complaint about his work. Its another option if you cant source anything else. I know they are currently working on a 300 BLK conversion for the Tavor.

Thanks , from now on im only shooting cheap chinese ammo in cheap chinese guns .. beware of that crap if you care about your barrel life ..

Funny, I've been saying that since the norc ammo started coming in and usually get flamed. Too bad people always need to learn the hard way.
Sorry about your luck, hope you find a barrel for it. ATRS or Heron arms may be able to help you if you can't find a factory barrel replacement.

Good luck.

Cheap ammo? Never heard of cheap ammo causing this before, as long as there's enough powder in each cartridge to fully fire the bullet... so I did a search. On another forum, one user suggests the following, which does indeed make a lot of sense:

Ringing the barrel refers to a ring bulge. There are several ways to get a ring bulge in your barrel, one of which is trying to shoot out an obstruction in the bore. Another is firing the rifle with water or oil in the bore. The bullet eventually rides up over the liquid and forces it outward. Since liquids do not compress very well, it forces the barrel metal to expand at that point.

So... maybe it wasn't the Norinco ammo, but more likely an obstruction in the bore or some sort of liquid (oil or water)? Many peeps around CGN are using the Norc stuff by the crate and so far no reports of ill effects... except this one.

Yep cant say for sure if it was the norc ammo but i have had enough issues with it to stop using it , i have had many primers pop outa the case and jam up the action of rifles , even a primer could have got in the bore ? Im thinking snow or heavy rain could be the culprit too have shot the rifle in both .. I will call around tomorrow and see what a new barrel will cost me , sure wont be as cheap a replacing a AR barrel ..

I asked Ian to make me a heavy barrel for Tavor, and he said he couldn't do it .. That was few month ago.

There seems to be a new thread every week about someone having issues with Norc ammo.
Primers popping out, undersized projectiles, random cases of it with bi-metal bullet jacketing (horrible for your barrel).
None of my rifles will ever see a single round of that crap and I won't buy a used rifle if the owner is honest enough to admit he has used it, same goes for MFS. I pay too much money for my rifles and barrels to risk them to that cheap sh!t.

I doubt the Norc ammo caused the ring in the barrel but there are way too many reports of problems for me to ever buy it. Save a little now but replace your barrel more often.
From what I've seen it doesn't group well either. My buddy was shooting it through his XCR and was making about 6 inch groups at 100yds so I gave him a mag full of my American Eagle black box and the groups shrunk to about half that.

Interesting. Was it just the heavy contour option he couldn't do or was it a tavor barrel in general because he has the bit about working on a 300BLK conversion right on the front page of his website.
