Is this "normal" wear on a bolt carrier stopper?

This is after ~1500 rounds. It still works fine, but I noticed these marks while cleaning it.

So I just tested a 30/5 Gen 3 PMAG and it does lift the BHO slightly, as TV describes in this thread. Likely the source of your wear.

Edit: the lifting is not as drastic as with the previous generations, but is still there.

I never put any weight on the magazine. Even if I do, it does not seem to push the BHO into contact with the bolt face.

A loaded mag (either 1 or 5 rounds) moves the BHO VERY slightly up, but it still doesn't get pushed up above what I would call flush. In the flush position it is not even close to be contacting the bolt face. The PMAG does not move the BHO at all when the BHO is in the up position, holding the bolt back.

To me it looks like the damage is done by the bolt when the BHO is brought down to release the bolt. The bolt will always slide on the BHO face. The spring force to just to high for the material that the BHO is made out of.

Or maybe not having the bolt all the way back before trying to lock it open? Not that I have done this very many times.

I will file down my mags to be on the safe side.

Where can I order another BHO from?

I forgot about this issue. After a 1000 plus rounds through our one Tavor. Could see some mild marking but nothing worth worrying about.
Let the boys use the ATRS 10 round mags for the last little while. Holy crap they lift the BHO way up. NOT COOL. BHO on both Tavors are pretty beat up.
All mags filed and tested. Going to order some more D&H or some other steel mags for Tavors.
10 round LAR mags are all GTG.

North Sylva will have another Bolt Hold Open for you. I don't think mine was more than $10.

Good find on that thread! I can't believe that was almost two years ago now!

GeerGuy, have you ever had problems with your bolt hold open not engaging on some magazines?

Operation has been 100%. I just did a carbine course that put it through the motions with no issues.

I was thinking that maybe the magazine would have more impact on the BHO if the mag was inserted forcefully, like with an emergency reload. I just don't see how the mags that I have can push it up high enough to make contact with the bolt face.

I will contact NS.

Ok I just opened my Tavor, and by peering inside from the back and from the trigger assembly mine doesn't look that bad, I shot about 700 rounds so far. It does have some markings on it though.

Now I used the original mag just to see whats happening, I don't see it being any different than my atrs mags that I filed down... I don't think its a mag issue.

edit: I always use atrs mags, but they are filed down into a nice deep square. now I wonder if its the atrs mags that caused the issue.

I had the exact thing happen to mine, it is not caused by using pmags, etc. in my experience as all I used in mine was colt USGI mags and it still developed the wear at about the 2500 round mark. I emailed north sylva who in turn told me it's normal even though is quite clearly isn't. The only advice I have is to replace it like TV suggested and get a spare or two.

Well tv I took my bolt left open thingy out and yah there are some markings just like yours, I've had 2 failure to feed so far, but I didnt make too much of it, but now i'm worriedm do you know where I can get a replacement?

Edit: i checked every single beowolf mag and caa atrs mag I had and yes some were still pushing that damn thing up just a little even after being filed down, maybe 1 or 1.5 mm max. Just enough to cause some problems... I dont see any noticeable strange wear on the bolt, but definitely some wear on the bho.

I'm convinced that my Gen 3 PMAGs are NOT to blame, but I can see that some mags could cause this type of damage if the follower or mag body is too high. With 1 round in, which is the worst case configuration, there is still a good 2mm from the BHO to the bolt. I think the wear occurred from me not having the bolt fully back when pushing up on the bolt release. It took awhile to master this maneuver, so in the beginning the parts rubbed on each other due to incorrect timing.

I'm still trying to get my hands on a new BHO or 2, when I do I will replace mine and run with the same unmodified PMAGs to see if any excessive wear occurs again.

I broke down and bought a brand new Tavor yesterday. I have not shot it yet but ... I also picked up 15 gen3 PMAGS with it as well. Hope im not going to have an issue with the Pmags. Would suck after buying 15 lol

Ill read this thread better in the morning

I just called North Sylva...the first guy I talked to didn't even know what a Tavor was. :D

The second guy I talked to said that they won't sell anything direct to the public, and I would have to go through a local dealer to order it in from them.

Just a quick follow up on this thread.

My replacement bolt carrier stopper (AKA BHO) finally came in from North Sylva to my dealer. It was ordered in Feb 2014. It is only the flat metal part (does not include the spring, pin or plastic lever) and it cost $44.

Even though my original one is kinda beat up, I have not had any failures with it, close to ~4500 rounds.

I'm taking the Tavor course this weekend and I will inquire as to the "expected" wear on parts and what should be replaced over time.
