Tavor IDF model and Olive Drab availability?

Hey guys,

I've decided on either buying or building an IDF clone Tavor with the M21 sight affixed to the barrel. Is there any in stock or en route to Canada?

I also recently heard that O.D. green US tavors are in production, does anyone know if there has been any intent to bring the Israeli O.D. models to Canada? I really like the look of the FDE, however I think it's a bit less practical in our countryside. I considered the Rit Dye route (which I've done before on plastic parts, not guns), yet have experienced uneven coverage several times which makes me cautious of boiling a new gun.

Im not TVPP, but I will have to do as I am sure he is busy playing with his new timney trigger that arrived today.

I think it is important to note that our FDE Tavors arrived relitivly unanounced shortly after the americans got theirs. So with that in mind one would assume that we will be getting the OD ones around the same time or shortly after. Another more proactive route to finding out is if you called Jon of North Sylva and asked him.

Let me see if I can dig up his number...

Another thing to note is tbat currently all we get is gen 2 flat top Tavors, so that may impact your true IDF clone. Also spare barrels are not yet available in either the 15" CTAR length or the NR 18.5" length, so essentially what you have is what you got and that is all.

Here's a snapshot of my IDF clone build:

Meprolights with the original Tavor clamp are a rarity these days, but sometimes you can find some early owners who have swapped out to flattop rail and are getting rid of their old Mepro.

It's not hard to swap the full flattop you get in a store over to the barrel clamp mount, but finding the IDF gasblock and front sight could be trickier. I'd definitely hit North Sylva for that.

If you want a true clone, buy the factory restricted rifle in whatever colour you desire and start hunting for parts. if you want close with all the fun I'd buy the NR model.

one more thing: the US guys are going to have a shorty Picatinny rail soon like mine, and then you could just get a Mepro 21 with the standard mount. That would leave you a little more flexibility.

I don't mean to hijack but did you paint that colour scheme yourself?

I dig that two tone look. I'm guessing you started with the tan tavor?
What'd that cost ya? Is it that armacoat stuff? You can pm me lol

He started with either a Gen 1 or 1.5 Tavor from Canada Ammo which was looooooonnnngg before the arrival of the FDE gen 2s. Armacoat doesn't cost to much if you have the balls to do it yourself.

Another option is hydrodipping. Liquid Customs from Red Deer did a toronto CGNers Tavor in Kryptec Highlander for 270 bones. Im thinking one needs to be done in multicam.

Thanks man. Sorry I don't know much about black rifles and hydro dipping lol. Does a hydro dip give corrosion protection etc like that armacoat?

I'm selling a car soon and going to gift myself a black rifle NR and the tavor is in the lead thus far lol. But I like to customize stuff
 
That's what I feared, that the IDF models had became vapourware, I checked every website I could think of in Canada for stock. In my opinion the IDF was the perfect tavor, just what was necessary, nothing extra and much less sharp edges.

I do like your short rail, it may be a good option as its functionally equivalent to the IDF barrel mount and would be a bonus to be able to throw on another optic if the M21 fails. Does it mount the M21 at the standard height (co-witnessed)?
Can I just remove the flat-top rail and install the short rail without any other parts (I understand no back-up sights) or are there other necessary parts?
Is the circular mount for the magnifier still on the flat-top gas block (I see it on yours, but I wasn't sure if you switched blocks, or neutered the rear back up sight from you IDF block)

I studied a few parts breakdowns and photos and think I answered my own questions, please tell me if I have this wrong...

As far as I can tell the differences from the Tar-21 IDF to the Flat-Top are:
1) the Gas-block with rear sight (whereas the Flat-top model has no rear sight or magnifier mount)
2) the Front sight is just not installed
3) the M21 is special with a mount to attach to the barrel.
Everything else appears the same. It looks like if I could find the M21 I could swap it on and get going the add the BUIS later.

Also, the mount TV-PressPass shows appears to be the same height as the M21 mount and would effectively then allow QD of the M21 with almost no negatives from the original design, very nice!

P.S. - TV-PressPass - Thanks for spending the time to create all the videos and provide the information that you do ... your sight and posts here have been very valuable. And thanks to everyone else that posted here too!

Your 3 differences there are spot on.

Just remember when looking at the US SAR-21 IDF model its also only got an 18" barrel on it. The original Canadian rifles were all 18.5, but the current US stuff will all be restricted barrel lengths. Hope that helps!
 
The original Meprolight reflex sight was very limited in its capabilities. The current gen rifles are much more flexible than the original gen 1/1.5 models. Your best bet is to post a Want to Buy ad in the EE.
