Tavor split times

What kind of split times are you guys getting between your first and second shots while doing controlled pairs on close targets? I'm debating trying a Tavor for CQB (and general screwing around) and I'm trying to predict my times as compared to my AR. My Robson runs consistently slower splits (.05, longer reset) but faster mag changes (if I lock the bolt). I'm curious what you guys are seeing from your Tavor's. Shot one on the weekend; loved it!

Controlled pairs or hammers?

The trigger will not be much of, if any factor when comparing a Tavor with an AR as far as splits with controlled pairs - maybe if you are hammering the target (depending on type of and distance to target). The biggest difference is how the two guns can be driven and their opperating systems. The AR can be driven out and recoil controlled with the support hand with a lot more variation that would suit the shooter while there are no reciprocating parts to compound the recoil. The Tavor support hand is tucked in on the hand guard and the long stoke piston coupled with the sharp impulse makes for considerable shift even with a break (mine was equipped with a PWS and admittedly I never tried another type). This is very noticeable at say 25m that is probably close to the maximum range most shooters would feel comfortable hammering a 'classic' IPSC target.

Yeah I suppose that depends on how close is 'close range'... at 10 yards, I can fit in at least 11 shots within 2 seconds from low ready with my AR. I can't come close to that with the Tavor (even at 5 yards) because of the differences in the trigger.

Hammers, I haven't heard that one before. That first video is exactly what I'm talking about. It's the trigger weight and reset I'm concerned with. As the distance increases it becomes less of a concern as I, not the rifles mechanical's, become the limiting factor. If I decide to go down this road I'll have to experiment with way's to drive the gun from target to target. Where there's a determined kraut there's a way.

I would imagine that it should be pretty nice in CQB given its nice compact size, I mean IWI designed it specifically for urban combat right? I would think the slow down would be mag changes.... Now keep in mind, I don't have one nor do I have experience in handling one... The AR is nice and fast with mag changes with nice ergonomics, how's the Tavor compare (with the mag well behind the trigger)? I wonder how tactical reloads work too? Anyone have experience with these, I'm really curious!

I have found mag changes to be slightly slower compared to my AR15, but I suspect most of that is attributable to the fact that I have less practice with the Tavor. If you don't already do it, use the thumb of your shooting hand to release the mag while reaching for a fresh mag, its reasonably fast. Often I can drop the mag into my dump pouch without even touching it by using this technique ... hands free.

On the plus side, the Tavor isn't as prone to malfs as the AR .... said malfs mostly the fault of pinned mags and difficulty seating them upon reloading. One other thing ... the Tavor seems to be quite happy shooting without cleaning for much longer periods.

As to speed of shooting, I find the first shot with the Tavor slower, but followup shots quite fast. Thats all subjective though, as I have never timed myself ... might be a good project for this season.

Hey Gothmog, are you guys going to be running taci rifle events this year? If so, send me the dates and I'll show you guys how to go slow and embarrass yourself. Oh, and visit my dad, he lives around the corner.

Yes, we are planning to run events this year. I have just sent in the request for match dates to the executive at TMSA and will post them on CGN when approved.

And slow is just fine, we have everyone start out that way ... there's no shame in staying safe.
