Tavor vs AR

I am looking at getting my first evil black gun.

I am set to go, but keep looking at the Tavor, because I appreciate the unusual, like the design, and can really get behind the NR status.

Have they worked out the hideous accuracy, or are they still several years out before they come into direct comparison to a reasonably good AR?

The tavor isn't restricted. So when it is banned you won't be on a official list. The AR platform is pretty big might want to put forward a couple of specific makes/models because this could easily turn into a norinco ar vs tavor thread. The only real similarities are they are semi autos in .223/5.56. If you want to build a gun go with the AR.

If the Tavor is in your budget, get it. However, for the same money you could get a world class AR. The deciding factor is how much NR status is worth to you.

As far as I know, the Tavor has serviceable accuracy. It was designed to go to war with, not be a precision target rifle.

The Tavor will never replace the AR because you can buy two very good AR15's for the price of one very serviceable Tavor AND AR15's do most things better than a Tavor.

If you target shoot mostly at the range and spend most of your time in the field with a hunting rifle, then get an AR (Colt, Daniel Defense. etc) for range use only.

If you don't have a range membership and prefer to spend all of your target shooting AND hunting in the field, get a Tavor.

you can't go wrong with either one, however you should try them first and see what suits you best. Accuracy is not bad, about 1.5" groups at 50 yds with an eotech without trying too hard....(stock gen 2 trigger)

couldn't have said it better myself, op it all comes down to if you want restricted or not.

ya there really isn't any comparing the two rifles. Figure if you want a NR or R and then you can start comparing different AR's or different NR's like a tavor vs xcr vs acr.

Here it is, I own both so Im not biased, I have a colt m4 and a tavor. Both are quite excellent, but since, for now, I only shoot at the range because frankly Im afraid of shooting in the bush and dealing with an overzealous CO or RCMP taking my Tavor away because either it looks evil baby killer or Im accused of hunting, or some other BS, I now prefer my AR.
If you plan to shoot only at a range, AND you can only afford one of these 2 rifles, get a good quality AR i.e. colt, kac, dd.
As for accuracy out of the Tavor, bench rested with my elcan and a cold clean barrel and hornady vmax I get 1.75 moa, which is comparable to my m4.
One great thing about the Tavor is that its not picky about your cleaning regimen, that thing will fire and cycle no matter if you clean it or not.

I agree with Mike!
I own both. The AR is more finicky about the cleaning. The Tavor, once opened up, just falls into your lap! Accuracy wise, the AR is probably better due to the trigger. The Tavor requires a bit of practice to get used to the ergonomics and the operating system.

I bought a new tavor last weekend and am 750 rounds in love with it I'm no marksman and don't have the best glass on it and I am seeing 1.5"-2" at 50 meters and 3"-4" at 100 meters. I don't mind the heavy pull of the trigger or the weight of the weapon. only thing I can think of really is that today I was out and I found my right eye stung a bit from the gasses.

Depends on what you want to do with it... The Tavor is nice because it is NR and you can take it in the bush. Accuracy is OK; it would get a bump from an expensive Super Sabra trigger.

If you are planning any sort of action shooting games you will quickly find the AR is superior for handling... Mag changes and stoppages are faaaaaaar easier with an AR as your controls are in front of you and you can see them. Even the slickest and most drilled need a glance to manipulate to change mags or clear.

I also own both and have shot both in competition to a reasonable degree. I used to really love my Tavor. Then I shot a top shelf AR (still priced around the same as the Tavor).
Now I only shoot ARs.

I will say that the reliability of the Tavor is amazingly top notch, I didn't clean mine for over a year with no hiccups.

Almost bought a Tavor yesterday. Now, seeing that colt c7 video....I'm feeling liked a stunned coont. I have the cash and I want to put in some serious shooting time and get to know one of these rifles like I know my own.... But which one?

Love to see threads like this. God, think of the man-hours of accumulated wisdom floating around this site. Keep it coming!
