I have a friend who has a small sized bear - head and hide and wants to have a body mount done. I told him I suspect the price for that would be $1000+ minimum. Any idea as to what sort of budget he needs to expect if he wants to have it done

Sorry in original post I used the word cub - it was a small bear - taken legally in Northern Ontario. HE skinned it so it could be taken to a taxidermy if someone wanted and kept the meat

You better say where, how, and why your friend has a cub in his possession before the hunting ethics police come out in force.

Local guy has won awards... he charges 350 a linear foot... plus extra for bases etc....

I had my bear done at Brain's on Hwy 11 in Ontario. It was not a full body mount but a rug and it cost me a grand. The bear was small, only about 250 lbs about 5 feet. I suspect that a full body mount would be as much as twice that. Hope that gives you some perspective.

Thanks headspace - that gives all the info I need.

I can remember a number of years ago when I was out deer hunting - back when I think you could get both deer and bear licenses at the same time (I dont bear hunt so I dont know the regs) but I watched 2 cubs about 50 yards away playing for about 20 minutes. I had my sights on them watching them - As I watched them I had an interesting thought .... I wonder where momma is? and decided I was not interested in pulling the trigger

I am not a bear hunter, so my question is this. Is it illegal to shoot a bear cub. Or is it just frowned upon?

Illegal in BC.

From page 63:

Be aware that there is no open season on any bear (grizzly
bear or black bear) less than two years old or any bear in its
company (e.g., the sow). Take the time to ensure that cubs
are not nearby.

Taxidermy cost for small bear in Ontario?

I think bears should have to pay the same amount as everyone else.

And I don't think that they should have to pay more or less based simply on their body size. That's discrimination.

What's next? Separate entrances for Polar Bears. ;)

Depends on what area you are in and the quality of the work.. As well obviously the name (reputation) the taxidermist has built for himself. My taxidermist would charge about $1500 for a full mount small bear, which would include the tanning fee.

For me, I concern myself more with the quality of work than I do the price because in 15 years I'm not going to remember if I spent a grand or three, but I'll sure as hell be pissed if my trophy looks like ####e..

Like I said... Guy near me is an award winner... You guys are right in line price range... A trophy to me is a once in a lifetime occurance... Worthy of getting done right for sure...

If he skinned it and doesn't know what he was doing or how to properly store it it may be ruined or cost a lot more to fix. Just a thought. $350/' is a decent deal if the guy is good. I hunt for the meat so I couldn't care less about the hide

Agreed. Which quality taxidermist you have in mind?
