Hey all you .338 WinMag experts, I have just come into possession of a TC Pro Hunter with a 28" barrel and was wondering about some initial starting points for it.

My thoughts are that 225 grain bullets would be optimum for it and was going to use RL22 for a start but have seen some good things written about it with IMR 4350 too.

I am just wanting to get a good accurate hunting load that will do the job on Moose or Elk out to 450 yards if need be.

Any tips, pet loads or just plain good advice for me starting this out in the right direction?

Thanks in advance, Bob

there's a REASON that factory ammo comes in 250 grain bullets- it's the best all- around bullet there is for the 338 now that the 275 isn't around anymore- my pet load is a 275 grain semi spitzer over 70 grains of 7828- you name it, this load has taken it- now that you can't get 275's anymore( i keep mine for REALLY BIG BEARS) i sub in a 250 and get just about the same performance-

My load in my T3 is 250gr Grand Slam and Re19. IMR4350 didn't work for me.

I did use 225gr Hornadys to start with and they shot great, but I got a deal on a bunch of 250s so changed over.

Thanks for the tips t-star and Kenny G2, much appreciated. Anybody else have some brainpower they would like to contribute to me? :)

RL-19 and H-4350 have worked well for me.
I think the 225 TSX is as good a game bullet as you will ever find.
Barnes is coming out with a 265TTSX and a 285 TSX soon if you want really big bullets

I don't have a load for you, but overall the .338 is at its best with the heavier bullets, they have really good sectional density and significantly better BC numbers than the lighter bullets and hit harder for bigger game.

I have tried many 225 grain factory loads and found that they have a snappier recoil than 250 grain bullets. I will only shoot 250 grains now. Out of my 24 and a bit inch barrel with 67 grains IMR 4350, Fed 215 Match primer, Nosler Brass, 250 grn Sierra Gamekings (2715 fps) I can get moa. I just picked up a pound of RL19 and can't wait to give it a try since my 300WM loves the RL22.

I am using 225 TTSX (excellent BC .514) over RL 19 velocity 2860. 75.3 grains works in my rifle.Start 10% lower to be safe. Excellent long range bullet. Took elk at 550 y, 400y, moose at 251 zeroed at 251 yards. I would use it on big bear as well.
