Hi there,
He's 9 yrs old, normal build / height etc,man size .22's get heavy in the aim, plus the stock ends up under his armpit,so he's all messed up.Is there a .22 out there that fits the bill ?
Cheers
TM.

Look around for a short barrel Cooey Model 39 single shot with the "bass belly" stock. Cooeys are plenty accurate, the single shot is ideal for teaching proper safety/loading skills and the combination of the short barrel and bass belly type stock fits most youngsters very well and wont be too heavy for them.

I had the same problem with my kids. I started out with a Backpacker .22 pellet gun, then bought a Marlin Popoose. Both are great rifles. I've also heard the Henry Mini Bolt is great for the kids. I'm not a fan of Henry rifles though.
Love to go out and shoot with the kids. Enjoy.

There is a little .22 by Marlin I think, called the cub, made specifically for young or smaller shooters. 16" barrel, single shot bolt... Or if you want a little cheaper Mossberg has a little bolt .22 for beginners that has a little mag adapter that limits it to single shot, then when you feel they are up for it you can give them the standard 10 round mag. But then again, everyone needs a Cooey ^.^

The Henry Mini Bolt .22 Single Shot Bolt Action Rifle looks great,$269.00 at WWS,$45.00 rimfire scope,$60.00 mounts, has he been good enough to get it though,it aint Christmas and his b/day was in March..............will the wife be ok with it,what about his sister.........decisions decisions !! c'mon guys give us more advice here ??? LOL.

This is the rifle that my father bought me when i was 12 years old, back in 1986. Its a light weight and reliable/easy to clean .22 Rifle Its a Rossi Pump Action

Not sure if they make it annymore but if you can get your hands on one it would be great for your kids as a starting rifle.

Something to consider is if this gun is going to be just a stepping stone or something he will use and cherish throughout his life. If the latter I would consider a CZ 452 in one of the better grades and if the former, just something cheap, reliable, and safe.

i have a savage mkII-f and im 17 im normal build not to big of a guy and i find that gun to small for me maybe have him hold one of these its an awsome thing shoots incredibly accurate and bolt action. great over gun but a little small i would highly suggest this gun if it fits

good luck nate

Wow. I wish you guys were my parents. I had to save up and buy my own .22. Took me about 5 years to save enough for a Rem. pump Fieldmaster. (from when I was about 11 'til 16) Kids these days have it good.:D

As a 9 year old's first I would say pellet gun too. I started with a springer and my kids are learning on a backpacker mentioned earlier. They are easier to maintain than a powder burner, no powder residue to worry about. Because of their shorter range it makes it safer to discharge (with a pellet trap you can have a shooting range in the basement). Move the targets to 50 yds and he will learn about ballistics and wind drift.

After he grows a little, buy him a rimfire that will fit him for the rest of hs life.

I'm going to start my son off with the BB gun that was my dad's, then mine when we were kids...

It's a Daisy model 95... the spring is so old on it... if it gets away on him... it won't hurt anyone... Then I'll step him up to a stronger pellet gun... then a .22...

I'm not sure when to give him each of these... I got the BB gun when I was 5 I think...

I've got plenty of time though... he's only 4 months old!!

I have a Savage .22, and love it, especially the accutrigger. Actually everybody loves it :)

As far as 45 for the scope, and 60 for the mounts.. this is just a .22 here, why so much for the mounts???

I started my 10 year old son on a .177 pellet rifle and then moved himto a Rossi single shot a year later. He quite likes the Rossi and it fits him well. I bought the two barrel combo with a .410 and a .22LR and it is a good price. Seems like a reasonable firearm for the price.
