I'm debating on which coating to put on my stainless rifle. Its $200 for teflon and $250 for the powdecoating. Does anyone have a powdercoated rifle? How do you like it?
thanks
I have teflon since 1998 on just the flutes cut into the barrel and a buddy got his receiver, bolt handle and barrel all done. Both jobs were performed by Corlane's in Dawson Creek,BC. They do exceptional work.
I have not had any teflon rub, scratch or wear off my rifle, and the powder coating is suppose to be superior to the teflon. With the powder coat, you can pick your color, teflon you cant
I have heard that Teflon can start to flake off. Powder coating can get pretty thick, and contrary to popular belief, it can scratch easily with certain abrasive type things.
Have you looked at coatings such as Dura-coat,Arma-Coat or Gun-Kote??
I had my Rem700 action & stainless match barrel Gun-Koted OD (their Bake On Coating) and that coating is pretty much bulletproof.
All those listed offer Ambient cure (No Baking required) coatings.
I'll have to look into those other coatings. Skullboy, where did you have yours done? The thickness of the powdercoating was something I was concerned about(although im not exactly sure how thick it is on rifles).
I have tefloned Voere in 7mm Rem Mag, and a powdercoated 99 Savage in .358W, both done by Corlane Sports, and both look great. No trouble with either one at this point, though neither has seen a much rough use...(now that I'm old I've started to take better care of my stuff !). The Savage was done just last year, and I went with the powdercoat in part because the guys at Corlane told me it was MUCH more durable than the teflon.

I have had both teflon, and powder coated guns from Corlane. The Teflon looks better in my opinion, the powder coating looks like thick paint, but the teflon was showing signs of wear on the sharp edges, the powder coat stood up better than the teflon. There was no issues regarding the thickness of the powder coating-Corlane does tons of them.
I don't have an actual measurement of the powdercoat thickness, but will second what double gun says...kind of like a mediun/thick coat of paint. I think the final appearance has a lot to do with the color/texture of finish you choose. I narrowed mine down to 4 or 5 choices, and Corlane sent me some small sample plates so I could make a final decision.
