Tell me about 1911's

I'm excited, I'm getting a 1911 for the first time, a norc commander length! Got a few questions for those smarter than I:

What is parts compatibility like between 1911 brands? Can you generally just swap out internal components? What about slides?

Also, who in the lower mainland does armacoat/duracoat application? What about parkerization?
 
I would say "no" to parts swapability these days, there are too many manufacturers all at different tolerances. The parts might fit, but whether they are fit correctly and not effect reliabilty is another thing. Thats where the idea of 1911's not being reliable comes from, it is not the design that is unreliable but the manufacturing. Everyone that has a Glock, Sig or HK , always recommends original manufacturer parts . If there was only one maker of 1911's , then reliability would not be a concern. So my recommendation is to buy quality parts , but pay a skilled and quality gunsmith to properly fit them to your 1911. One of the best things about 1911's is also there worst drawback, they beg to be tinkered with and customized, but there are too many unqualified smiths and home smiths that work on there 1911 and then ##### that there 1911 is unreliable. Your in BC and alot of people recommend Gunnar at Armco for there gunsmith work, check the banner of sponsors at top of page. Hope this helps

A number of years ago, Norinco 1911A1's well well made. A little rough around the edges but a very good gun. I have 2 of them. I have never had a problem putting in other parts. I built my own IPSC gun & installed many parts that work well. However, maybe I was just lucky.
Just remember with yours that it is a shorter slide & spring & barrel. It is a commander.
I agree with Scully about buying quality parts & using a good gunsmith.

Yes sir it is. :)
I still prefer euro guns (Sig, Beretta, Glock) but those are very nice and customizeable. A little more complex to take apart but much more aftermarket.

Argueably the best handgun design of all time... so good everyone wants to build one these days... and every self respecting handgun collection has to have at least one in it... Period. :popCorn:

Yes most parts are quite interchangable.

I find the 1911Forum at: http://forums.1911forum.com/index.php to be a lot more fun board to hang out at.

More relaxed and you aren't constantly being reprimanded and points deducted from your "good boy" count if you accidentally post in the wrong forum!:rolleyes:
