G'day, complete Gun nutter move but i think im gunna jump on a 20 round old Kimber hunter in 257 (will add pics later) of a hunting buddy...

I'd like to hear more about the little gun and little cartridge from You guys who'v experienced one or the other.. ive got the montana so im happy with the metal work aspect.

This is in place of the .243 w 100gr projies i spruke as being possibly the best mtn rifle for sambars when used correctly :D :p :X and will be without doubt labelled as my Sons rifle (currently 10) so i have some time to get to really know it.. if ya know what i mean!

I would want it as a general walk about rifle to mostly hike long distances in rougher country searching for Fallow deer mostly, with Wild dogs on the menu-
the odd Sambar would trip over the bullets path i would be sure of that happening.... *( targetting sambar is min cal of 270) ..

im thinking 100+ grainer of good construction with some ADI powder , 200 odd Cases an that should make for a handy outfit.... knowing there is suitable Fox projectiles in arund 85? 90gr..

Rhys, My kids cut their teeth on a M700 Classic I owned in 257 Roberts.
Very fine performer on Game up to big Muleys and Whitetails.
IIRC, I shot 2 moose with it as well, using the 120 Partition. Both
DRT. It needs a 1-10" twist to stabilize the 120's though. Dave.
 
Kimber Hunters are worth every penny. I liked my 308 so much, I bought a 6.5 creedmoor too. They are the perfect weight, but if you think you want to shave 7-8 ounces off it, you can remove the goo in the rear of the stock and the pistol grip area, and make them as light or maybe even lighter than a montana...... they are very accurate too.
 
price he wants is 2k which is RRP, but include Redding dies, some brass, an talley rings...

im going to have to think about that... they were RRP 1495 a while ago an i think this is one of them... jut had been safed- i know the bloke...

id gamble on a used one down the track an be able to find one i believe... im not guna spend 2k on a 243 let alone 257 nor any magnum until work picks back up!

will continue thought on it an maybe pay him off but i have a feelin hes chasen the hard cold cash.
 
I picked up my 257 Rob Hunter back in the spring, it’s been a great rifle, I mounted a Leupy 2-7 on it with some Low Talleys.

It’s more than accurate enough for me, feeds great, nice and lightweight.

I’ve worked up a good load for it with a 100gr Partition over IMR-4350.



 
I once came across a Kimber Classic Select in 257 Bob at my local gun store. I was going back and forth in my mind weather I should buy it. Went back the next day and it was gone. Still kick myself for dragging my butt on that one as it was a fantastic price. If I ever come across another I won't hesitate this time.
 
No experience with the bob.

I do have experience with the hunters and I’ve been extremely happy with all of mine so far. If it’s a newer model (2014 to now) it will most likely have a “B” stamped in the breech end of the barrel above the extractor cut. If so, it should be a shooter.

As mentioned, there’s 8oz of a two part polyurethane rubber added into every hunter stock to make them appear heavier than the competing models. It’s easy to remove and takes about 10-15min.
 
No experience with the Kimber but I have used the 257 Roberts in a Ruger no 1, a Browning BLR and currently have a left hand 700 action at the smith waiting to be chambered in the Roberts. I have shot a lot of Whitetail with the Roberts and have found that the 110 grain Accubond and IMR 4350 have always worked well for me.
