Reasonable shape, commercial early model 1911.

The VP in triangle is a Colt stamp. I don't know the JJ.

You have the serial number blanked but it still appears to be a C then 5 digit, probably signifying around a 1915ish manufacture.

Everything looks original and proper to the gun, except the trigger, although correct just looks changed. And the hair, it has to go...

The crown over V (I believe) is a British proof.

That's about it for me.

the hair i know... those macro shots bring out the best and worst of everything :D!

thanks very much for the info!

question:
does british proof mean it was leased to britain by the US?

Not neccessarily on Lend/Lease, but right age for it. It just means that it went to England at some point and time. It was pressure proofed there before being released for public sale.

Obviously it made it's way back to the colonies.

BBQ, BBQ, BBQ.....are you buying out all the neat stuff from under us? You seem to be acquiring alot of interesting and nice pieces lately. :)

:D
I sure hope I am!
I love everything I get!
Whenever I see something that seems wonderful I just need to get it!

I'm going to check the serial now, and write it down in this very message...so there was no need to say that.. one moment..
.. and im back
the serial is C 15156

also, what is the Horse (with what looks like) a spear across its legs?
is that another british thing?

thanks!
hope the serial gives up some secrets!

Its the Colt logo...aka "Prancing Pony", aka "Rearing Colt," etc...Colt made the slide at least.

Hello,

I can't remember the exact Canadian Contract Serial bolcks but I believe yours is in there. Hopefully someone else might chime in a corret this for me. This would mean it was made during 1914 for the Canadian Expeditionary Force. If it was it would have been in the last block of guns delivered.

Out of curiosity, what was the purpose?

I have to imagine it was part of the arms buildup taking place between Britain and Imperial Germany, mostly spurred on by a Naval Arms race and threats to Belgian neutrality.

You really need to reduce the size of your pictures before you post them.
"...does british proof mean..." Nope. It means the pistol was sold in England at some time. English law requires any firearm sold be 'proofed'.
"...the Horse (with what looks like) a spear across its legs..." That's a Colt trade mark.
The Springfield Research site says it was made in 1912 for the U.S. Navy.
