Tell me about the .30 carbine round

Im thinking of picking up a non restricted M1 Carbine soon. The .30 carbine round its chambered in I know absolutely nothing about. What popular pistol round is it most similar to? What can I expect balistics wise? Also I assume its a good coyote round but im not so sure about deer?

Any advice would greatly appreciated.
 
I wouldn't use it for deer. It's kind of like shooting a big 22 LR( recoil wise ). I think the ballistics are somewhat similar to a 44 mag round shot out of a revolver, (so I have heard). Also, I personally wouldn't make a "hot" load for a m1 carbine. They're fun as he'll to shoot and ammo isn't too expensive.

I have most often heard it compared to a .357 magnum. It has about the same muzzle energy but with a lighter, faster bullet.
I would have zero issue using this on coyote. Effective range would be up to the ammo I was using and would make sure to test it out on the range before trying it in the field.
For deer it would work but would require excellent shot placement. Lots of people have used .357 levers to hunt white tail in thick brush successfully.
 
My buddy told me countless stories of his mother hunting deer with a m1 carbine with great success way back when he was young,25+ Years ago. Way before they were restricted. So I wouldn't exactly count it out as a deer gun.
 
For Deer hunting in Ontario it is a nice round to use. Just be sure to use a proper hunting bullet and not a FMJ, save them for the range. You will need the expansion for a clean kill. You should be able to find some SP's or HP's from site sponsors up top, just be sure to test them for reliability in your gun before hunting with them. The M1 Carbine makes for a very nice light bush gun for around here.
 
most carbine will only feed round nose ammo reliably, but the soft points expand pretty good usually.

the .30 carbine has as much energy at 100 yards as a 44 mag pistol does at 50, and 44 mag is considered pretty powerful for a defence caliber. that said, its not a 300 win mag. if you treated it like hunting with a bow, you would do fine
 
Best place to get .30 Carbine ammo? Canada Ammo says sold out of Tula at 13.99/50 and Tula Ammo says 23.99/50. Whats with the almost double price from the supplier????
 
Buy it at WSS for $30/50 then sell the brass. Brass is about $35/100 new

Can Ams price is old. Tula got less cheap a while back
 
Reloading is the way to go with the M1 IMHO.
I have a decent National Postal Meter with it's (presumably original) 43' dated barrel that typically gets around a 5-6" group at 100 yards with factory Winchester or Remington FMJ.
With simple hand loads of Sierra 110s, VV n110, and regular primers those groups shrink down to 2.5-3"
