How long before being considered a resident? What can and can't I hunt? Maybe some good fishing? Maybe there's someone here from the area? And yes, I'm moving there.

Contact the local Renewable Resources Officer at 1-867-360-7605 in Gjoa Haven and he/she will have all info you need in regards to hunting & fishing in the Kitikmeot region.

Thanks, will certainly do that anyway, thanks for the number. Was also hoping to hear from someone with some firsthand experience.

It's been over a dozen years since I last lived up that way, so my info may be dated, but you can get a small game almost immediately but for big game you have to be a full time resident for 2 years.

The correct answer is Three Months for residency, which makes NU just about the most friendly province in Canada for hunters. I pulled up their hunting regs when I got the word that I was moving over there.

The NWT is still two years, they haven't changed. Nunavut obviously took the opportunity during the division to modernize their Wildlife Act.

I'm looking forward to becoming Nunavumiut like Otokiak. Well, kinda like Otokiak. :D

Nice, I wish it had been that way in the 90s!

That is incorrect. For Big Game the answer is two years unless you hunt with a guide which is then 6 months. There is no Conservation Officer in Gjoa Haven at the moment but you can call 867-473-8937 or 867-927-8966 and talk to a C.O.

The correct answer is BUM's, to be considered a resident under the wildlife act in Nunavut you have to live there for three months. But, there is a caveat, you still have to go with a 'local guide' until such a time as you have lived in the territory for two years (for safety reasons).

Now, it is up to each Hunter's and Trapper's Organization to come up with a list of local guides within the community that any new resident can have access to. The local guide designation can either be paid or not...If the HTO has not established a list of local guides than you can go out on your own if you so choose.

HAVE FUN and get out on the land as much as you can, it will be an experience you will never forget!!!

P.S. GJOA has big muskox, caribou at times and decent fishing...
