Tell me what I need to know about the Marlin Model 336

I have been told by a relative that I am soon to be an owner of a Marlin 336 in 3030. Its a gun that belonged to a long time member of our hunt camp with a lot of personal meaning to us. He gave it to my relative who is now giving it to me.

I dont know its age but im going to guess around 1970. Its most likely fired less then 100 rounds. Ive never owned a Marlin. I do own a Winny 94 so it will be a nice companion to that.

Anything I should know? Any particulars about these guns that I should look for? Are guns of that vintage typically drilled and tapped for scope mounts from the factory? If it is, I think im going to scope it and load it for Hornady Leverevolution loads. Should make a nice 200m deer gun with those.

Have a look at Marlin Owners.com. Lots of good info on that site. If it's a '70s production it should be drilled and tapped for scope bases. They are generally well made. I have a later model produced after Remington took over and it seems there was some quality control issues although mine seems fine. You can easily remove the bolt in order to clean the barrel from the breach. Should make a great companion to your model 94. Cheers Bac4

I would choose the 336 over the 94 as they are so easy to mount a scope on.
Yes, some of us require more glass than the ones perch awn our snowt.

Great accomplishment on Marlin with these great lever guns that are generally very accurate.

They are generally at least as accurate as a Winchester 94. Easy to put a scope on because of the side eject feature.

Here's a big advantage to some: It is the work of about ten seconds to pull the bolt so you can clean from the breech. It's also very simple to disassemble and re-assemble the entire rifle.

My only remaining tube-fed lever is a 1957 Marlin 336A. Very accurate and well-balanced.
For hunting, I put on an old steel-tubed Weaver K3 with the heavy post reticle and was quite pleased with the results: 1.5-inch groups at 100 yards and 1-shot bang-flops at 40.

As far as I know only on Deluxe older rifles and looking at the Marlin web page it appears the studs are standard on all new 336's.
If the sling stud is mounted on the magazine instead of the forend cap or forend band, it's likely not original.
Likewise if it has a walnut stock and no bullseye insert; for some reason lots of people mount the stud there.
