Telling difference between an Izzy and a Tula

Makers marks.
Tula is a star with an arrow inside.
Izhevsk is a triangle with an arrow inside.

Stamps will be on a lot of different parts, large ones on
Receiver cover and stock.

Izzy's were only made in 53 and 54. Any other year is Tula. There are 53 and 54 Tulas as well, see "CanadianARs" marking notes, or the sticky in the Red Rifle forum for detailed pics on the Russian SKS markings.

Tula = run of the mill Russian SKS

Izhevsk = less common... run of the mill SKS.

Personally I find Izzies to have better fit and finish. The milling is a bit better too. It's been said (not confirmed) they have better hard chromed barrels.

Personally, I prefer Izhmash... sorry, Izhevsk.

I once had a beautiful 53 Izhevsk SKS and found it slightly better made than the Tula's I owned. It did seem the metal work was slightly better with a nicer fit and finish. Plus the Izhevsk ones are harder to find.
