I don’t have a lot of money.

I own a US Colt AR15A4 20” 1/7 twist Gov’t profile. It was an expensive rifle for me. I generally don’t like owning restricted firearms because of our mindless firearm laws. I was recently tempted by paying silly money for a used non-restricted gas gun in 5.56. It would mean selling the Colt. I still own the Colt. The market still needs to do better for me to move.

Honestly, if I had one rifle it would not be restricted. There’s a whole world of fun things you can do outside of the range. Sell it, buy something cool. Someday when you can afford one buy another colt, they aren’t going anywhere.

Your colt is a very good gun. I have bought just about every non restricted black rifle available over the past 15 years. None I would consider any better than your colt and most are worse. The restrictions on the colt are a pain, but you will find that you spent quite a bit of money to buy something that is maybe not quite as accurate, ergonomic, or reliable as your colt.

Another possible option you could look at once it hits the market would be to get a Maccabee Defense SLR receiver set. Granted it will set you back a grand, but you could transfer the parts over from your Colt to have a non-restricted gun set up in a way you are familiar with.

This is going to be a tough thing for you either way.
I know your love for accuracy and that means that the AR family is king of the hill in the 5.56 world.
You are going to have to weigh that against your tendency for NR and what you can best ring out of an NR.

I THINK YOU NAILED IT BROTHER.
I really want some of these NR black guns but my goodness we are getting nailed with those prices.
The Kel-Tek RDB interests me but that plastic lower... I'm weird that way...
I've been waiting years and years for the prices to come down and penny rubbing folks like me are still waiting.

I am sure this has crossed your mind, but if you sell the colt, and keep a keen eye on the EE deals will present themselves. I have seen XCRs, Tavors, etc go for $1500.

The XCR rifles are capable of sub MOA. The barrel mounting isn't as much of a big deal as people think.

I have become a student again, and had to go through this situation. I ended up getting something I never thought I would because it checked all of the boxes for me and was decently affordable.

My rule is if you are unsure, don't do it. Wait until you know for sure you want to exchange one thing for another. In the meantime save the pennies you can.
