Tens of millions of birds disappearing across North America

CBC....Communist Broadcasting Company.

Peter Mansbridge is the most one sided pr*ck I have seen in a long time.

David Suzuki runs a close second.

If it is on CBC, chances are it is crap (except the Tommy Hunter Show)

Oh come one, what about "Little Mosque on the Prairie"??;):D

Hey guys..don't you have a bit of heart :D!? I like the song of the birds too :D..

Now,seriously folks, when someone point the moon, are you watching the finger  (did some of you actually watched the video?)!?

I'm no freaking ecologist/evangelist,i'm just a guy who was raised near the woods and left for the city to get work (and let me tell you i hate it)..but the point of this video is that bio-diversity is in danger..The problem is ..us! We are just too many and we are spreading everywhere..sururban sprawl destroy habitats and wet lands for wildlife!

The more biodiversity there is,the better..It make the ecosystem more resiliant to attacks!

Take the Irish potato famine back in the middle of the 1800's for exemple. At the time, the Irish were highly dependant of the potato crops until a mold destroyed a great deal of the crops ! In less than 7 years, the population crashed by 20-25%!! From the famine and others who did leave the country before starving to dead..from there come the great migration of the Irish people in North America (including the US and Canada)..

Closer to us,in 1970 the corn-leaf blight destroyed 60% of US corn production in a single summer.

Right now, there is a great dieoff of the common bees used for agriculture propagation who are mostly the same sub-species..It might cause a lot less crops in the next years if we can't find a cure !

All this to show you that you never know when you'll need some diversity coming directly from nature or elsewhere..In destroying our envirronement like we do,it could bite us in the ass some day :(!

As for me..better be safe than sorry :D !

Actually, as I was informed of this on the weekend, the killof of the honey bees is not to worry about because generally Honey bees do not fertilize Crop plants. Domestic bees do.

I agree with most of your points that we do need to change the way we are doing things, as a lot fo the good wildlife areas are just slowly being taken over, etc

Good to see some support ! I was afraid to get mauled as a Suzuki follower :D..

I don't know were you got your infos, the last time i've read about it,theses bees were pretty important for apples crops.

http://aginfo.psu.edu/news/07Jan/HoneyBees.htm

"For instance, the state's $45 million apple crop -- the fourth largest in the country -- is completely dependent on insects for pollination, and 90 percent of that pollination comes from honey bees," Frazier says. "So the value of honey bee pollination to apples is about $40 million."

In total, honey bee pollination contributes about $55 million to the value of crops in the state. Besides apples, crops that depend at least in part on honey bee pollination include peaches, soybeans, pears, pumpkins, cucumbers, cherries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries.

From a university in Pennsylvania, but i've read the same data from a couple of others sources :).

The bee scare overstated the number of disappeared bee families. I read an article, that demonstrated that only small number of families disappeared while other families were just fine on the same farm.

And housecat's

there was an article not long ago about the proliferation of feral cats, which were nothing more than sue's little kitty gone wild- they're not only responsible for the destruction of several speices of birds, but ground dwelling animals as well-

Blame it on house cats, and the fact that little boys aren't allowed to shoot grackles and starlings with BB guns in their back yards (that is the ONLY bird I see in the neighbourhood any more - they've taken over).
