I am curous to hear what others do in terms of test firing their milsurps. I know that some people use the tire and string method and others hold the rifle away from their bodies and close their eyes. I am just curous though as to what sort of methods people use for the initial test firing.

Anyone?

I suppose you could always bring your beloved in-laws to the range.....'oh no I insist you can go first.....I just left something in the truck'

If I have thoroughly inspected the rifle, and am satisfied that it is sound, in good working order, I am no more reluctant to fire it normally than I would be if it were a used commercial rifle. If the rifle is sufficiently questionable that I would want to fire it with a string, would I really want to use it anyway? An ex-military rifle has been fired before, so unless something has been messed with, there is no reason for it to have become unsafe.

I wasn't really asking this for my own personal use - I just thought it might make an interesting thread - but thanks anyway for your comments - :D .

I'm more nervous shooting a brand new Norinco for the first time then I am shooting a newly acquired 90 year old US issued rifle......:)
I give them a complete tear down, complete cleaning and inspection before firing. Unless there are holes drilled in the chamber or the bolt is cracked, not likely going to KB on you........

I have done the string and tire routine with a few milsurps . never had a problem even with the so called dangerous Carcano. kinda feel stupid later after I have put hundreds of rounds through the same rifle .

This is how we do it, these are not surplus but captured or confiscated foreign weapons.

I'm gunna test fire my Carcano and an M44 I'm getting probably next weekend. I've given the Carcano a good cleaning and inspection and I figure it should fire fine, haven't got my hands on the m44 yet but plan to do the same thing, just look 'em over and fire.
