A buddy, and I are going to be down in Texas this spring and are thinking of doing some hog hunting. Has anyone been, or have any suggestions/input? The stuff I've been reading lists the minimum caliber used is to be somewhere 243 or 270, I was thinking of taking a 30. Thoughts?

I use a 30-06 or my 7 mag on all of the ones that I have shot. I have hunted with guys that have used 22-250 and 243's as well. It depends on how big of boars you encounter and where you hit them.

If you are going to the expense of a special trip, why not make it extra special and hunt them with appropriate handguns while you're there anyways? You have several months to practice.
(see if you can rent/borrow them from the outfitter?)

just a thought

Take what you shoot well and put the bullet in the right spot. Also use the right bullet for that spot. Even though one fella has said his buddy has shot them with a 22-250 ( which I think is lots) another guy will post that untill the 338 Win. Mag was invented no hog had ever been killed with a gun. I seen this debate before.
Good luck and have fun !

Where in Texas are you going? Which county? Check with Texas parks to see where there are more at a particular time. Their CO’s are very friendly and helpful.

There are also some interesting individuals down there. :)

BTW don't forget NVG or a very good light. You can take them with any thing you want. From a knife and a spear to a 50 BMG. Get them behind the ear and you will stop them. No limit and don't have to take them out of the bush either. Let them rot or when the coyotes come out for the meat, pop them too. The more hogs and coyotes you kill the better for the locals. Some chase them from the box of a pickup trucks – that a lot of fun.

Enjoy it.

I can't wait to get down there and give it a go. We are staying in the Corpus Christi area. It's an annual pilgrimage for my buddy, and my first time down. I wish I was able to stay the whole month like he is, but a week will have to do this year.

Take a good pair of brush pants. The thorns in Texas are nasty, and the hawgs love to hang out in em.

Here's how they hunt them in Texas, gotta love the Texas way of doing things!!

I've hunted pigs in Texas the past two winters and booked again for this coming February. Got a tradition going of watching the Superbowl at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. Had great trips so far. Nothing but fun. Smallest I would use is .243 with a good bullet like a Tsx or Partition. You could go smaller if you limited yourself to headshots, which a lot of ppl do. They're a pretty solid animal, even the smaller ones. Usually have plenty of time to take easy shots though, kinda like bears on a bait.

God I LOVE Texas!!!!!!!

Last year (ignore date), east of Dallas....click the pic :sniper: ...
