One of my friends is building Texas Star himself.
He has almost finish, but he stumbles on how to
secure plates, so they drop upon hit and stay when
star is turning.

Has anyone has got any pictures or ideas how to
secure plates to the arms?

Please advice....

i think I would just use a hinge.... with a chain on the back of the plate so it is leaning forward by a few degrees so bullet splash will be downwards..... plus the chain holds the plate from falling forward.

The design I have seen uses two roll pins through tight fit holes in the arm that fit into loose fit holes in the plates. There is a spring that holds the plate on the pins that has enough give to allow the plate to be pushed back far enough to fall off the pins.

Connection is T shape with rounded corners, cut gives enough clearance and spring (wire type) holds it in place.

Plate has to fall off so wheel is out of balance and starts to rotate when first plate is shot off, thus the need to start at the top ---unless you are really fast. Nice to try with rifle at 100yds or so.

What I am thinking is that the plates need to fall back and stay back even when rotated upside down? If so just buy some rare earth magnets from princess auto and have the plate contact the magnet when pushed back by the bullet.

All the Texas Star's I've ever shot had their plates secured via springs.
The whole idea behind the star is to have the plates fall off when hit so as to change the whole balance of the thing making it rotate/swing...
That's the challenge of the star...

If the plates just fell back, but remained more or less where they are the star wouldn't move.... Completely defeating the purpose.
What you'd have there is a plate rack... Not a "Texas Star"
