I'd like to thank everyone who supported my public position on guns last week. The emails you sent to me and my colleagues (many of whom were speaking out against me) made such a difference. As you may know, the Solicitor General of British Columbia has made very negative statements about my right to speak out about gun ownership and discussion about self defense. The press has paid a lot of attention to the story and I have received hate mail and nasty calls to my kids at home even.
Still al least the story has people talking about the gun registry and self defense, particularly as it applies to women.
All the best to you and yours, thanks again.

Sharon,
I have contacted the Solicitor General's office about John Les's unfortunate remarks.
It is one thing to fundamentaly disagree on an issue, but it quite another to use the language the Solicitor General did in doing so. He used poor judgement in that and he must explain himself.
As for the hate mail and calls, all I can say is there is quite a lot of people on the other side of this issue who feel that that have the moral duty to eliminate any debate on it from taking place in public. They are elitist, hypocritical and they are viscious. They will do anything short of violence, and I'm not even really sure about that, to intimidate people who believe in the right of armed self defense.
Many of them are immature emotional adolescents. You have challenged their world view and the concept of "Canada" they feel they have created and established. There will be a rational public debate on the armed self defense issue, but there will also be a completely irrational and emotional one from these people, and you have already seen it from some of your mail and some of the public reactions.
The good news is for the first time the issue of carrying handguns for self defense was not wholly dismissed out of hand. The majority of editorials featuring yourself have been good or at least neutral, with only a few editorialists and opinion makers reverting to type and condemning you.
You have given National Firearms Association the in we have been looking for to spark this debate. Thank you. The concept of providing for their own self defense is foreign to many Canadians. Statists have carefully constructed a vision of society that many have bought into. But at the end of the day most Canadians are not fools. They can and will defend themselves by any means necessary, including firearms if the situation calls for it.
Hold on, this debate is just starting.
