Just to follow up on this old gun, the records show that it left the factory in .38-55, 30" No. 3 octagon barrel :) , plain trigger. The sights and level are not original, the Swiss butt plate has been added as suspected. No mention of the set trigger either. Still a very valuable rifle.
 
Many of the old Winchester Single Shots have had parts swapped on them. The serial numbers are on the ( removable ) lower tang, so in a rifle that has had some parts swapping can be pretty different than what it's supposed to be :). In this case it's likely that someone added the single set by swapping a few parts.
