that awkward moment

I thought I'd make it thru the season without it happening again. I was wrong. Every year I face at least one awkward moment out hunting whether it be dropping my knife in such a way to hit every rung of my ladder stand on its way down or forgetting to knock an arrow. Or even answering natures call then realizing a hidden trail cam. Yup my season was flawless till bout 15 mins ago. I was invited to bow hunt on my buddies tag for archery. I said let's go to a bush I know of a 10 point I have seen. While in my stand A gorgeous coyote slips into bow range on my weak side still in light cover. I twist to get aaa shot on my shooting lane and he stops. Assuming he heard me I pause. His body language speaks of different tone. Just 5 more yards for a open broadside 15 yard shot. I start squeak kissing the stock in hopes he will step out. He jerks his head up and stares in front of my stand. Then he turns and bolts. No shot. I sit down in my stand put the safety back on and mutter oh well next time. Then it Happens. I look down not 15 yards in front of my stand there's a big 10 point staring up at me with that look like "wtf. That's a big ugly tree rat". He is now in the safety of the next township. Man he can fast

Been shooting bow most of my life and never seen a bow with a safety

down in my stand put the safety back on and mutter oh well next time

But ya i feel you pain i missed a nice buck this year becouse I forgot the turn the storm alarm off on my watch.

I use a crossbow hence the safety. Oh well :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: happens. I've had great year already with a bear. 8 point buck and 2 anterless deer and some nice goose shoots. Its nice to get out and wildlife. Come january 1st ill start the hunt for that coyote

Many moons ago when I was quite the lad, I took the notion to go grouse hunting after work.
Brought the old Franchi with me and spooked up a bunch of legal deer.
No grouse.
Next day I bring my rifle with me, no deer, but spooked a bunch of grouse.
I looky up and say, "soooo, you had your fun yet?"
Funny how this thread sparked this memory for me.

To think you're out in the bush and fiddl'in with your CGN rescue mobile....
This in itself is kickarse funny.

Enjoy the day.

I've put my phone down to shoot the last 7 deer and 2 bears that I've shot. Cgn was there for 5 of those deer. The rest were poker crib or euhre.

I listen better when staring at my phone lol

I'm sure we have all had those moments that we regret. Its good to look back and laugh

It's funny - we must go into a trance-like comatose state when staring at our phones! This year I was in a ground blind looking at my phone and next thing I know there's a doe standing half behind a tree 20 yards out...

brybenn, your predicament reminds me of a time a few years back when I was hunting this monster buck in S.E. Manitoba. I saw signs and then spotted him in some high willows moving along a deer track. Only his head and neck were visible and he had this amazing thick rack so I didn't want to chance a neck shot.

So I set up near where the track crossed the trail I had been moving down, put out a scent pad to cover my scent even though I was downwind of him, took aim down the track and called. I'm focused looking down the track when I catch movement behind me and to my right. I swing around to see this 8 pointer running out of the bush coming up the trail, do a full emergency stop (seemed like it legs were pushing back as it was sliding forward), let out a loud "mmmph!" then hightail it back into the bush where it had come from! This all happened in seconds.

Not only did I not even get a shot off on the 8 pointer, his commotion alerted the monster buck I was after and he was gone. I was miffed and a little spooked how close this 8 pointer came. He was no more than 10 yards away when he broke cover behind me.

a few years ago ..likely closer to 10
My boy and i got bored , took the ol cooey out and did some shooting on a line we were watching .
stopped for some reason or another , turned around in time to see a large bull moose crossing the line behind us...no time to get the hunting rifle out:redface:

being distracted has caused a lot of missed shots, yours was a coyote...mine was popcans:redface:

out in the stand one time, got thinking i would quickly check the corn in the field about 100 yrds away. will be fast and nothing will come in the short time im there. get there look at a few cobs spent maybe five or ten minutes turn around to head back to the stand. a nice sized doe is walking past it  learned to stay put..................or try too

This thread brings to mind my missed chance last week. I missed a nice 10 pointer at maybe 50 yards (brush deflection). I couldn't believe that I had missed at point blank and spent the better part of an hour tracking the big guy, looking for even a speck of hair or blood in the snow; there was none. I finally sat down, feeling fed up and waited 10 minutes in self-pity mode.
Then I got that weird feeling you get when you're being stared at. I looked up and not 20 yards from me was the deer I had missed. I slowly brought up my rifle, aimed carefully and squeezed off a "CLICK"! The buck snorted and bounced away into thick scrub brush. I watched him meander around rubbing trees and sniffing around for 10 more minutes, but could not get a shot off because of all the trees and brush. Mr. Big ghosted out of there very much alive, well and horny.
When I finally pulled my round, it was intact, with a nicely dented and unfired primer. Later examination at the reloading bench confirmed everything had been loaded properly, but that the primer was a dud.
I am a little annoyed to say the least- but look forward to meeting Mr. Big next year.
