Gopher time again :) :) :)
I just saw my 1st fatty. Got to get my 10/22 together and get lots of ammo.
Whats the best ammo that will blow one away in 22lr?
 
Damn Toymaker. You need to share some of those gopher spots in Manitoba. :) I was going to head out towards Morden today with my binoculars but the task seems daunting. Maybe we'll see you at the CGN gopher shoot in SK one year.

I second the vote for Yellow Jackets. However I'd just shoot whatever I found to be the most accurate in my rifle as I prefer accuracy over splat factor. Any .22 bullet will kill a gopher, but only if the shot hits.
 
I was out last Sunday using Velocitors and they seemed not to anchor gophers like i thought they would. Too much penetration i think.
 
Stingers have always been my favourite ammo in my 10/22.

nice shot! I want the best .22 ammo thats will blow one up good just for kicks. I use cci standard and they just basically kill them. My friends buffalo farm has millions of them willing to die for the cause
 
Well, the Yellow Jackets are sizzling fast (they actually make a sizzling sound when you shoot them) and have a pointy bullet with a very deep hollow point. Combined this makes for a nice gopher round. Luckily this is what shoots best in my CZ.

I would like to try the Stingers. I've not seen them at the store in great quantities so I've never bought them.

I thought that the CCI Quick-Shok (fragmenting bullet) would be the end all for gophers. They shot great at the range but cause no extra damage on gophers. I think the Quick-Shok killed the most instantly though.

Accurate in every one of my guns, and they have been 99.01% reliable for me, in 5000 or so rds I have shot I had one misfire, but the 50rd box had been left out in the weather for some time(I must have dropped it). Several coyotes have been taken with chest shots(head shots too) with this ammo, they run about 25 yards and then just fall over.

I wanted to pick up another case the other day... damn price increases!!!

I too was disapointed in velocitators, and don't care for stingers, but yellow jackets are sweet.

I don't get to excited about gopher shooting anymore, in fact its almost boring lol, especially with a slightly tuned 10/22.... I did blast a few dozen today.
 
well cant find any mini mags or powerpoints in saskatoon. Wholesale sports has some yellowjackets so thats what ill use for now i guess. I found some American Eagle hp's as well. Yellow jackets $4.49 /50. Thats $45 a brick. Ill just get one brick of them and 2 bricks of American eagles for $29/brick. Geez .22lr is getting expensive. Not really :p
 
Yellow Jackets in a stock 10/22 receiver don't seem to play well for me.... BC stock - stock receiver -- BC heavy barrel... Maybe someone else has another opinion.... Federals feed through like butter.

I've put probably 7 or 8 thousand rounds of yellow jackets through mine without any problems untill last year. alot of duds, even with good primer strike. everything else feeds and shoots good. Too bad they really smoke gophers. I run a b/c heavy barrel too.

anyhow i called wss and couple of smaller gunshops and also looked in walmart. Last place is Can tire, ill look tomorrow.
Maybe u can save me a call or trip and tell me where there are some.
