OK, I've done a little looking around and it seems to be a common problem. You take your stock off, do whatever fiddling you're doing, put 'er back together and the safety bolt has rotated out of place causing all kinds of mayhem and havoc. Yer trigger won't work. I know how to fix it but it is a pain in the a*%. I'm not exactly sure what causes this to happen so I haven't figured out a prevention for it. Someone please link me to what must have been discussed elsewhere? The fix? Thanks.

Dunno that one. I do have a 10/22 that fires every time the safety is taken off though......can't let rookies handle that one.

When putting the Butler Creek folders on, the trigger hinge pin needs to be replaced with a longer one (zip cut a drill bit). It'll work till the pin moves sideways enough and then the trigger has to be reset manually.

I've had 10/22's apart literally hundreds of times and never had a malfunction after re-assembly. The safety is a simple crossbolt that has a m shaped cut-out that a detent ball rolls into and out of when going from safe to fire. You can rotate the the crossbolt safety clockwise or ccw which compresses the detent and allows the crossbolt to be removed. I very rarely do this however unless it needs a thorough cleaning due to dust/dirt.

Yes i am familiar with this problem, and it happened the first time i took my 10/22 apart. After re-assembly i noticed my safety would not engage properly and something was stopping me from pulling the trigger. I came to find out my safety had rotated and the spring was out of place. It was a very tedious process to get it rotated back and the spring seated properly in it's groove. It was a pain in the ass, and i would never voluntarily take my safety out.

The problem is caused when the safety is not seated in the middle of the trigger group when re-inserting it into the stock, and it rubs up against the side of the stock, when you push it in to seat it, the safety rotates and the spring inside pops out of the slot/groove it's seated in.
