I was doing some reading on 9.3 cartridges and it surfed me to this cartridge. Turns out the case is a shortened 9.3X64 Breneke. I remember when it was introduced (1999 it appears) and haven't heard a hell of a lot since.

It appears it has been poo-pooed for the most part by the African crowd, as it doesn't measure up to the H and H. I can see where it would have good use on this side of the pond. Factory 270gr @ 2610, handloads with 225gr should approach 2800...

Any one here shoot the 376 steyr by chance?

I always wondered why it didn't appeal to more people. In a short carbine it would make a handy rifle for nasty critters. Give it time, 40 years from now one of the brand names will be marketing it as a ".375 Short Ruger" or ".375 Bobcat" and it'll be touted as the latest development in cartridges.

Nothing wrong with it per se. Just not a lot of sales in 375's, and the whole proprietary always hinders sales.

I still see dies listed and I believe Hornady still makes brass but agree it seems all but done. The 375 Ruger will be another nail in the ol coffin too I am sure..

I can't seem to find much other than speculation about wildcating the Steyr either. In other words no proof that it even has been used for a wildcat which is interesting. I think one site said it would make a great 338, Cooper wanted it to be a 35 and that's about it. Great case, no belt and being a bit shorter than the parent Breneke it would likely fit in any standard length action with no changes.

It was available in two rifles that were IMHO, too light for a 375 H&H performance...

The scout, and the SBS.... Im pretty sure it would have been a bastard on the shoulder, and one of the reason it didnt really catch on...
I think that Ruger also chambered a rifle in it...

Seems like the .376 Steyr has a bigger following in Austria und Germany than over here. It's mostly used for Driving Game Hunts and Wild Boars over there.
