I am shooting quite a bit of cast out of my 38-55 Legendary Frontiersman, and have been using plain based 240 & 265 grain bullets with 2400, H4227, Benchmark and a couple of others. I have driven them from 1200 fps up to 1700 with varying results. [Some shot very well indeed] I have a notion to try some Trail Boss and see what it works like. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has used this bulky powder in a 38-55 with cast, and their results. Thanks in advance, Eagleye.

For me, the main advantage to Trail Boss is that it fills the case and you don't have to worry about double charges or position sensitivity, it has never provided the best accuracy in my 38/55s however. H-4227 and a full case of Black Powder, or a duplex load has provided the best accuracy. More important then powder charge is using a bullet that is soft cast(30-1) and is a good fit in the bore (.001-.002" over bore dia.).

True Ben. My dad uses the trail boss because it cleans up easier than black powder. He finds wheel weights to be a satisfactory casting alloy. Though I believe his barrel is made from "smokeless steel" meaning he can load modern factory ammo with jackets.
I know the velocity is somewhere around 1640fps but I'm unsure of bullet grn or Dia or charge weight. Ill call him tomorrow and post my info then.

Hey Eagleye! What size are the bullets you are using (.379)? Thanks

I have three lots of bullets. Some 240 grain plain Base sized at .378", some 265 grain plain base sized at .379, and some 285 GC bullets sized at .380" I also was given another lot of 240 grainers, but I have not used them since they are quite small diameter. [.376"] My bore slugs at .3765", so I can't see these working well in my rifle. Eagleye.
