A Buddy of mine got his hands on a Ruger M77 in the .416 cartridge. What a gun! I wouldnt want to shoot it all day long for the fact that my shoulder/arm was numb after 6 rounds, and the cost of ammo is redonkulous. We were taking pot shots standing off hand at 300 yards with ease, but prone on a rest is where this rifle really shines. 500 yards? no problem! 6" groups all day long. Took 3 shots at 1200 yrds, with a 1 / 3 hit. I wouldnt consider myself a pro by any means shooting long range, the occasional R700 and such is all i do. But i gotta say, i sure felt like hot s**t leaving the range that day! Try one out if you get the chance peeps!

6" groups at 500?? sorry to say but thats not even MOA accuracy

but glad to hear ya had fun! iv toyed around with building a 416 or 408, but when it comes out to the same prrice as building a 50.. id rather have a 50 :D post up somt pics of the rifle!

I had a Ruger #1 Tropical in 416 Rigby and it was a tack driver!!! I handloaded it with Imr 4831 and 350 grain speer's and 300 grain Barns x. I loved that rifle but the beating recoil took its toll. Got a 50BMG now...way more smack..way less recoil:)

Perhaps that is true, but it does speak well for what were undoubtedly game bullets and from what sounds like factory ammo, a combination which seldom shines past 500. Still, what is done once is of little consequence, what counts is what a rifleman can do on demand. The 1 of 3 hits at 1200 can be pretty much discounted as we don't know the size of the target and must surmize that the shooting was done with a big game hunting scope.
