The bane of CyaN1de: Birth of the 6BR - "BC Roll": *new 100m group on last page

A bit of a background story if you haven't heard of this one before:

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=399354

Basically, the gist of it:

- attend F-Class clinic last April
- got hooked by some unnamed individuals
- beaten by a 10-year-old girl :(
- decided to build an F-Class specific rifle

After receiving help and suggestions from others, I began sourcing out parts. That wasn't so difficult, but the waiting part was. The project started in November, and I received an email last night from my gunsmith Mick McPhee, saying the gun was ready. Since I didn't have work today, I drove 350km (x2) to Kamloops to pick up the rifle and to meet the legend himself. Turns out we saw each other at the shindig last April.

Why "BC Roll", you ask? Well, I was thinking of a name to christen the gun. My friend was brainstorming for me, and she said "BC Roll". The reason behind it:

1) BC is my initials
2) A sushi roll looks like a barrel
3) She liked sushi

With the name in place, the specs are as follows:

Barrel:

Krieger
1-8" twist
1.250" diameter, straight
28" length
11 degree target crown
Chambered for 105gr Berger VLDs

Action:

Remmy 700 SA (originally a 308)
all the "clean-up" done by Mick
Holland pin/spring thingie
Single shot adapter installed
Oversized bolt knob previously installed by my buddy (last owner)

Stock:

Robertson GBF stock with all the goodies

Trigger:

Jewell 2 oz. BR trigger (no safety)

Optics/Mounts:

Sightron SIII 8-32x56mm
Farrell 20 MOA base
Leupold Mark4 Super High rings

Can't end a post without giving out some thanks here and there, so, thank you to the following people, in no particular order:

- Mick McPhee, my gunsmith, did an exceptionally great job on the gun. Meeting him at his shop, he expressed great attention to details that everyone would want from a precision rifle builder. His communication during the months was helpful, and he even showed me some very useful tips on reloading and such when I went to pick up the gun. Thanks lots, Mick, I'll let you know how the gun shoots!

- Ian Hames (Obtunded) and Richard Dreger (CyaN1de) answered a lot of my questions on the gun build and really hooked me into the sports with that great clinic last year. Two of the best shooters in Canada and really two nice guys with lots of knowledge. Your playful/sometimes borderline awkward banter on the boards also provide me with endless entertainment HAHAHA

- Jerry Teo (mysticplayer) for supplying me with lots of components like bullets and reloading gear for the 6BR, and also answering many related questions. Wish I could shoot out to a mile one day like you do!

- Joe ***** at *** International for supplying the Jewell. Great communication and the fastest shipping I've ever seen!

- Ian Robertson at Robertson Stocks. Took a while but good things are worth waiting for, and this is a GOOD thing. Support Canadian business!

I forgot who sold me the scope/barrel so you can add your name here ;)

And to all those who make shooting a joy. I'll be at Vokes this summer kicking Richard's ass...... :nest:

Nah just kidding. It'll be the other way around.

Oh yeah, pics in the second post. I won't leave you guys hanging like that!

That thing is absolutely sick man!!!!!! Beautiful, now get out and break her in!!!!!!!

Thanks! I would have gone straight up to the range tomorrow, but alas, work... Thursday though, I'll be up there rain or shine! 30gr of Varget behind those 105 Bergers should do well.

Judging by the colour pattern, I am thinking Willy442 may have been onto something.

I happen to like it. Enjoy.

Thanks, except I have no idea what you meant with the Willy442 reference

Good job.. for you for using so many good Canadian dealers..we really appreciate the work they do to get us product,, for little profit.

Thanks. All the parts/labour for this gun is Canadian and/or bought off CGN EE.

The only un-Canadian product here: my camera and lens, both bought in the US of A ;)

Funny thing, I am just talking with my buddy about that match. If my loads are good to go by next week, I'll definitely come out to Mission :)

(regardless, I'll be heading up to Mission A LOT next week I bet)

Damn you, you picked it up before I got to accost the whole build and not just the stock, it was over getting stock work done when I was at Mick's the other day so I didn't get a chance to see it in person.

If your coming to Vokes you HAVE to let me try out that 35L lens......I will bring my gear down with me......nice bokeh on those pics :D

If you get it up and running by Sunday there is a match at Vokes that a few of us Kamloopsians are coming down for....or just pop by to say Hi. Tell the Sentry you know us and she'll radio up.

She looks sweet Brian and if Mick built it....it will be a contender for sure.

PS Next time your up here, we'll go to Arigato Sushi......the service is less than stellar but their Smoked Salmon Rolls are to die for......YUMMMMMMMMMY :D

PPS I would try a shorter set of rings....your neck will be aching after laying down with that scope set that high.

Luckily you missed the finished product, didn't want any more of your slobber all over it :jerkit:

Unfortunately I won't be able to get 'er done by this weekend, so I'll take a rain check for now. I will likely head to the Mission match on the 27th, and also the LML Regional on July 17-18th. Dunno about the Provincial one, I'll probably go for a day or two, but not the whole thing.

I'll bring along my camera gear to those matches. The 35L is indeed an amazing lens. It's practically stuck on my 5DMKII nowadays. Sharp as a razor from f/2 and on, and the bokeh is creamy smooth. I need a better background than my house's back porch though

You shoot a 1DMKII right, Richard?

PS. I love my sushi, but man, I am permanently spoiled. The Wet Coast's Japanese population/restaurants notwithstanding (some excellent places here, BTW), but I used to live in Tokyo a few years ago, and my palate was forever "tarnished" with superb Japanese food. Hell, even my mom apprenticed under a Japanese chef, and her sushi is better than most restaurants out there! ;)

PPS. True, but it was such a good deal (BNIB on the EE for 70 shipped) I couldn't pass it up. :D Maybe I'll just adjust the stock to help relieve the neck strain if it becomes a problem.

Richard, if he likes a high prone position his adjustable butt & cheekpiece might solve that problem but I'm with you and prefer a low scope mount.

Great looking rifle from a 1st class Smith that should give all of us trouble.

Regards

Aubrey

Thank you for your kind comments, Aubrey.

As far as the rings go, I'll give her a go and see how they fit me. If it's not too bad I'll stick with them, or adjust the stock as needed, unless the problem is really severe (anyone have lower Mark 4 rings they wanna trade with me? ;)). I hate to let these go because they are such a high quality product.

Try them, but don't let emotions get in the way of function. A tight upper back and neck might be ok at the beginning of a mtach, but when it gets hot on the afternoon of day three, whenyour struggling to keep focus, fighting to stay in positon during follow through will go out the window. You should have no problem recouping cost and picking up more appropriate rings if you decide to.

VERY sweet rig. I'm looking forward to trying one of those stocks next month in the 'Peg.

Thanks for the advice. I suppose it's true, if I want to flip these on the EE it shouldn't be too difficult, but yeah I'll try it first and see how it goes.

The stock kicks ass BTW :D

Congrats bro. make sure you add those pics and specs to the 6mmBR #### thread.

Welcome to the 6mmBR clubR:d:

Thanks dude! I will add my pics to the p0rn thread.

RP, great looking rig. Love the colour on the stock.

The gun WILL shoot, no doubt on that.

Personally, prefer a tall scope height - no right answer, whatever fits you. Changing it is easy enough.

Summer looks to be swamped with family stuff so no more play. Will be at the Farky so hopefully see you and this mean shooting machine.

Enjoy....

Jerry

PS Sushi and shooting go very well together YUMMMY
