I read about it a while ago.I was looking into building cool model of a Hellcat and found this

https://www.ecardmodels.com/index.php/1-33-grumman-f6f-3k-hellcat-crossroads-drone-paper-model.html

If I remember correctly some articles claim that this incident was the end of unguided aerial rockets as a means of shooting down planes.Sidewinders very quickly replaced them even if they had their own set of problems.

What bugs me is that was in 1956-why did they send F-89s rather than gun armed F-86s?They were stationed in California at the time.

Sounds like it was a real CF. Always amazes me the value of those aircraft was considered to be so low, they would use them for targets. Bubba wasn't confined to military rifles. :(

Good find. Interesting, and l like the link to the X-Hunters.
Always wonder how ineffective the unguided rockets would be.
Also confirms the problems of gun-less military fighter/interceptor aircraft.

According to the info I read, the Scorpions at that squadron were recently converted over to a new fire control system, and the manual sights were removed. Big mistake apparently, if that part is true.
