After an absence of a few years we are going to be re-affiliated with IPSC Canada . We have a BB scheduled for Aug 17-18 , I am so excited to finally get this elusive object .
Does anyone have any advice or tips before I take the course ? How much ammo did you use on your course. Was it hard?

Hi there,

Assuming your BB course is the same as ours, the standard thing we tell everyone is to assume 500-1000 rounds of ammo (depending on how many warm ups the instructor would do, depending on how much of an issue you'll have with the various stages, etc). Re was it hard - it very much depends on individual people. Being good in one type of shooting, even other type of PISTOL shooting, doesn't guarantee that ipsc will be easy (a couple of years ago the top bullseye woman shooter in Canada went through the BB course, and she did not have an easy time - and she is GOOD in bullseye). You can never predict which stages people might have issues with, you just give it a try and see what happens.

if you can keep your shots on an 8.5x11" paper at, say, 15-20m, that's pretty much all the accuracy you'd need, getting into the course. The instructor will take care of the rest.

Make sure you have good equipment, you can reach the safety (if any) easily, can reach the mag release easy, etc... If you have multiple guns to shoot the course with, choose the 'easiest' one. The gun you'll pass the course with does not have to be the one you'll actually use in matches, afterwards ;)

Enjoy!

The biggest hurdle I see people trying to get past, is shooting too fast. When the beep goes and you are on the line with others shooting, and there is a time limit, there is a tendancy to speed up. Then you start missing and confidence suffers. Ignore everything after the beep except the front sight.
If you have some buddies doing the course with you, practice some of the exercises as a group to get used to it.

I have to disagree with you on that ipsc1. I think the biggest hurdle is getting to the line and after the timer goes beep !!! your brain goes into vapour lock and you forget how to run the stage .Total brain fart !!!!!

Don't ask !!!!!!!!

The instructor is coming from Ontario to pontificate upon us the knowledge of the BB as well as an RO course over 4 days
Going to be an interesting long weekend.

Would that be David Bartlett? I did my BB back at Magnum Range in Bay Bulls with him in '94. He runs a good, safe course and takes you through one step at a time.

Don't Sweat it for gear on the black badge

You can run just about any gun so long as it is 9 mm or more pistol or revolver. Will have to be able to do atleast one mag change for the black badge. As for ammo it really depends on your shooting ability. In my course the instructor kept running the stage until everyone passed. A person with good shooting ability 400 rounds is way more than enough. A person without shooting ability will need a lot more.

Don't sweat the equipment run what you brung. It is only in competition where it makes a difference.

At Restigouche/Dalhousie I saw your hits on target, weak hand and strong hand and free style; you have absolutely no problems with the accuracy department, excellent groups BTW. Very good trigger control!!
What model .45 were you shooting?

you have really good control, like a bulls-eye shooter. I don't imagine you missed at all this weekend. Once your speed goes up, you will be winning matches if you can stay even half as accurate.
