Made a visit to the range with my Savage 12 F/TR topped with a Sightron 8x32.
My first 5 shots were at an inch, I read a tutorial about Savage action screws and decided to follow the procedure . Groups tightened up nicely. Now if I can pace myself and show some discipline I should be able to make the challenge. I did try it, but failed on 2 outta 5 targets. Happy shooter!!!

One piece of advice I can give for tightening your group is to stop shooting your aim point out. Adjust your scope 1" up, down, left or right of your aim point (at 100yds/m). This will allow you to aim at the exact same point for every shot, if you shoot out your aim point your more likely to spread your group as you can no longer put your x-hair in the same place as the last shot.

This is excellent advice. Follow it and see a tightening up of groups for sure.

That advice is good; I like to use a target with heavy crosshairs that match my scope at a certain magnification. This allows me to align the crosshairs on across a wider plane than just the centre point as well.

Aim small, miss small might sound goofy, but the more consistent you can make your sight picture, the more consistent your groups.

What is the tutorial on the action screws?

basically, the jist of it , torque action down to spec, slowly increase torque on front / rear bolts and see if you can bring the groups in tighter, so you may end up with one screw at say 24in/lbs and one at 37inlbs

my opinion - get a proper stock and bed it, adding random stress into your action doesn't exactly scream repeatability, any extreme changes in weather is gonna cause all that hard fiddling around to go out the window when things start to expand and contract, heaven forbid what would happen if u ever need to remove your action.. starting back from the beginning, nothing guarantees when that action goes back in that the exact same stresses will be applied in the same way when every thing is torqued down again

AH HA!!! I always wondered why i would see targets posted in the precision rifle forum but the bullseye was never taken out, just a nice group above or below lol. Christ it makes sense now!

Great shooting !! That's some sage advice about shooting out your " aiming target" Cyn1de !

Powderfinger....you'll see where lotsa guys will fire the first cold bore shot on target, away from the bullseye.....then AIM for that first hole as an aimpoint for the rest of their group !

I'd bed your action. Nothing wrong with your stock unless you shoot where there's a lot of rain. Thought I read its best to have an accurate load before messing with torque for a savage rifle? Awesome groups!
