Hi,

I'm looking to replace the current scope on my shotgun (rem 870 with a bushnell 1.5x-4.5x) for something with much more magnification. I'm limited in budget to a max of 200$.

Which scope should i buy and why ?

If I try to use a typical cheap varmint rifle scope like a tasco 6x-24x(89$!!) should I expect it to keep zero while shooting 3" slug ??

I wouldnt use a scope any less then a Bushnell 3200 with 3" slug. Not sure what magnification you are looking for but you can get a 3x9x40 for $210 at Lebarons. Personally I would wait and pick up a Bushnell 4200 when you have the cash. Great glass and can take a pounding that a 3" slug is going to give.

Just my 2 cents!

How much more magnification can you possible use on a shotgun? Accuracy and range are both very limited compared to a rifle. Safety is also a concern, since most higher-powered scopes (especially in that price range) have much more limited eye-relief...it's a recipe for a world-record scope bite.

My buddy and I each bought one of those 6-24 Tascos...after using them for just a bit, I'm starting to wonder how long they'll stand up to the recoil of a heavy-barrel .22 bolt gun.

Any reason WHY you need (or think you need) more magnification?

Max range is maybe 150-175 yards no? MAX. Is there something you can't see at 4.5x that you'll see at 9x? Or 20x?

As always, it's your gun/money/eyebrows, but I can't think of what the need might be.

And no - I don't think a $90 tasco will hold up to repeated 3 inch slugs.
