I'm not much in the know about the differences of the Grizzly, Brown, and Kodiak bears...and if there are any other similar bears. I understand that in BC there's coastal and interior Grizzly, and the coastal to my understanding can be considerably larger. What about the Brown bear, and Kodiak? Are they found mainly in Alaska/Yukon/NWT? What are the differences? Are they all the same, just different sub-species?

By DNA they are all grizzlies, but the different ones in different areas have different characteristics.

Coastals all tend to be bigger, and the Alaskan coastal ones the biggest.

Sometimes the only distinction is made from where you actually find the individual.

i.e. A small moose in Souther AB will be called Canadian Moose. The same moose 2 weeks later in Montana is a Shiras Moose.

Genetically there is difference but it is muddled and ranges overlap considerably.

Diet is the only difference although there is some evidence that the bears on Kodiak island are genetically programed to be larger than a "typical" griz.

A coastal bear is larger than an interior one simply due to a longer and richer feeding season.
