The Canadian Rifle You Never Knew: SAL SLR

I wonder what modern weapons would have looked like if stoner died at birth or something.

I believe he did.

no he didn't. It was like pulling teeth to get them to help on the High Power, so I doubt there was any (direct or official) FN assistance on these projects.

What was almost certainly available from the British was a sample SLEM (development FN49) or the drawings for same.

Yes, as I commented on Milsurps when this showed up a few weeks ago, the designers obviously had a sample of the SVT 38/40 and drawings or a sample of the SLEM (wartime development FN49).

The top cover of the rifle with the forward rear sight is even fabricated similarly to the SVT38/40.

The magazines used are Czech VZ26/30/8mm Bren magazines.

Also Compare the CAL auto light rifle to the US T28....is sure looks like the layout at least of the T28 is a development of this lightened SVT40.

Very cool - definitely a synthesis of the SVT and SLEM. Real pity it never flew on its own - seems at numerous points through Canada's history we've developed our own designs or pioneered the way, yet repeatedly defer to other countries' wishes on them... one of the only guys who didn't was effectively bankrupted for ignoring the old boy's club and sold to SA, and assassinated when he went into business with Iraq.
