So after my “Compact Rifle Thread”, what did I end up with you ask? Well.. something that was not even on my list or radar.

Ruger M77 Light Weight in .270Win

Yes an orig “Tanger”. Luckily the serial dates closer to the switchover to the ‘92 Mk II’s and hopefully the known barrel quality/accuracy won’t be an issue (we’ll see). This one is a solid 8.5/9 out of 10 condition and was accurately described as such by a member here on CGN & GP.

Neither the Ruger or .270W was in my head, but it made sense for here in Ont. I can cover off Yotes with the .270/.277 S. Ont cal restrictions and still use it as a run n gun Deer/Bear/Moose rig utilising heavier projectiles.

I thought my R700 Mountain had a slim barrel, but this little thing is smaller yet. Ergos are definately a lot slimmer then I’m used to and something I’m going to have to acclimatize to.

Weighing in at 6.8lbs with rings, I’m already looking at light scope options (Vx III or FX 2/3). I do have an older Japanese Bushy Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 I’m gonna use until I find what I’m after as it’s been dead reliable since new, but certainly isn’t light at over a 1lb+

I’ve already contacted the folks at Wildcat about a possible stock swap. The Wildcat if/when done should beef the ergos up a bit, but for now it’ll sit in the orig stock and should be around/under 7.5lbs depending on the optic. About the same +/- as my Stock 700 Mountain SS. With the Wildcat, I’m banking somewhere 6-3/4’ish depending on whether I get the standard or ultralight blank. Either way I’m still into LW territory weight (6.5-7.5lbs) wise, which is where I like to be in non-mag cals.

Once I sort out the initial optics, I’m planning on some range time with off the shelf ammo initially hoping to split the 130/150 range with 140’s. Once I determine gr range likes/dislikes I’ll fine tune the accuracy with handloads probably using TSX/TTSX or Partions.

So, bookmark/check back as I keep updating I go along throughout the year.

Cheers!

I have had dozens of M77 RL rifles, Mark II's as well... they were all accurate, and the slimmer profile and lighter weight carry well. I sold a MINT Tanger RL in .257 Roberts to a fellow CGN member and years later, he tells me it is his favorite rifle.

This is my first Ruger so I’m hoping this LW turns out the same.

As promised, I’m updating as I go along with this side venture

I had a fellow member reach out to me on an older WTB FX II/III Ad recently, and lo and behold I’m now equipped with a FX II 6x36 for this setup. Which just goes to show patience is a virtue on those WTB Ads folks.

Quickly weighed it at 9.5Oz (+/- of course), adding that in to the weight of the rifle I should be at 7.39Lbs all in. Not bad considering it’s a wood stock and not a Synth of some sort.

Speaking of synth stocks… I did reach out to the folks at Wildcat and had some on-going chats currently. We’re not sure how much fill would need to be added to their M77 Mould to accommodate the pencil barrel dia difference, so bit of a state of flux there as whether I decide to move forward on that or run it as is..

Stay tuned more to follow ahead…

hmmmm- compact it may be but light it is not lol.

a dude i know breifly, down in the next valley or two over has one of these 'ruger lightweight' models, he rekons it was sweet an fairly light but i dont beleive him

I’m wasn’t overly concerned with the weight, more the ergos/balance and pointability. I figured as long as it was in the low-mid #7lb range all in I’d be happy, and actually I’m only a few Oz over my 700 Mtn so it doesn’t feel too foreign at the moment.

I think if I had actually set out to build a UL/LW Compact 20”er a M7/700, Tikka w/a Pencil type dia bbl and Wildcat combo or a Howa Superlight would’ve been my starting points. Only thing is, Howa doesn’t offer the Superlight in .270W ( yet ) so I’d have to re-think Cal choice to be able to check as many boxes off as I have with this current setup.

We’ll see what the Spring Bear season brings touting this Ruger around and whether I move up/down, forward or backwards.

Another update:

I quickly weighed the setup recently. All in with the supplied bases & rings (unknown probably Rugers) it sits at #7.2lbs (+/- for scale deviation). Under what I expected but not by much, it sits right in there alongside my 700 Mountain weight wise. So bit of a bonus on that front.

I did have it listed over on GP for a short period this week as something I had been looking for for awhile came up, but that sold quickly and given I’m pleased with this current config I’ll run it this season and re-eval it at the end of the year.

Now to amass some 130-150gr’ers and see what this little rig likes.

At just a hair over 7 lbs that is light enough for me.

Those are Ruger OEM rings.

Beauty set-up right there, would be a shame to rob it for jsut the action
if you are re-barreling a long action, there are numerous cartridge choices

'I did have it listed over on GP for a short period this week as something I had been looking for for awhile came up, but that sold quickly '
you mentioned something else came and went that you like better?
maybe a WTB would get you what you really want
