Ok like the title says, what is the best fixed power scope out there now, that is still available for purchase new. There appears to be a few brands. I am looking for something in the 4x range.

Any thoughts on this?

the best one I've looked through was a S&B 4x36. Zeiss makes (made??) a 4x32 Conquest but they may have been discontinued, a buddy was trying to find one a month ago and told me they weren't available.

The Leupold FX-II 4x33 is readily available and are smaller and lighter than either the S&B or Zeiss.

Yeah I cant seem to find a Conquest that is for sale, the SB looks good but US pricing is about $1000 for it. Was hoping to get something for $500 range.

I have read some so so stuff about the Leupold fixed glass in its quality and light.

Other brands that still seem to be for sale are Weaver K series, but they dont seem to rank Weaver to well for new scopes, not the old steel body fixed ones from decades ago.

Any others worth looking at?

oops that link is gone, they were reintroducing the steel tubed K4

As far as optics on the Leupold 4x scopes, I have three or four M8 4x33 and two of the newer FX-2 4x33.

As an observation device, the glass is slightly poorer than a high end Bausch & Lomb or a Zeiss Conquest, and poorer than the S&B (but what isn't?).

As a sighting device, I seriously doubt the optics in a Leupold 4x33 will ever cost you a shot on game.

EDIT:

found the link

So other than SB its either a Weaver K classic 4x38 or a Leupold 4x33? Any idea which is better of the two? Interesed in durability, clarity and reliability. Also where to buy weaver in Canada?

Weaver produced an anniversary edition steel K4 last year. There may be some still available. Their modern scopes are made in Japan and I think they all have fully multicoated optics. Of course the glass won't be in the same league as Zeiss, S&B, Swarovski, et al, but the value for money may be just as good.

I can't belive it, nobody mentioned the shortest, lightest, very clear scope with longest (5") ER and best scope value of them all (US $150), tough as nails - 4X20mm Burris mini, a favorite of mine....

Lastly the scope also has to fit on a long action of a .270 Win. How is the Burris? I have read alot of iffy stuff about them.

Yes, it is to short in Rem and Sav long actions with normal rings. And no I didn't see them on sale lately in Canada, only in US. I have two of them for more than 15 years now on some heavy hitters with no issues and comlaints, so far so good. Still looking arround to buy another one....
