So, what is the official word on 7.62x54R availability?

I am thinking of purchasing a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 after I get my PAL. However, it seems that this ammo is rather dear to come by lately. I've called all kinds of different shops around Canada, and apart from new Winchester production (over $1 / cartridge), this ammo can't be had for love or money.

So - all you dealers and collectors out there - how long do you expect this shortage of 7.62x54R to last? Weeks? Months? Years? Is it worth trying to import some from the States?

Its supply and demand. The cheap surplus comes from former combloc countries. this is at least the second availability/shortage/availability cycle I've seen.

Also, ammo in Canada must be tested by (for?) NRCan before it is allowed in . so even if a dealer finds few million rounds from a new source, it still takes time to clear the import hurdles. I'm glad there are still a few dealers avialable to make the up-front commitment to bring it in. So when it does come in, buy case lots - it'll see you through the lean times, and you can always sell some to your buddies who weren't as provident as you were...

Districorp.ca seems to be the one of the main importers for 7:62 x 54R.
My guess is by early 2009 we should see cheap ball hit the market again

I was just wondering the same thing and i find this thread. Yeah i just bought an mosin nagant m-44 .........maybe that was a reason for him selling it. I can't seem to find ammo although i haven't looked all that hard. I'll just have to buy hunting stuff when i can get it for now.

At $1.25 or so a round, I wish I could afford shooting the hunting ammo.

Can't wait for the surplus rounds to return to Canada

As I have said before , I was at the last gun show here in MB and there was more 7.62x54r to be had than any one person ever could want in a lifetime, no shortage here , also if you reload , see peter dobson at hirsch precision , lots of brass, (brand new ) to be had there, lapua brass even, best of the best , shortage ? I think not, just have to look a bit , btw same deal with 7.62x39 I bought prob 600 rounds at the gun show ,plus, between peterdobson and the gunshow ,at least 1000 brass , more than i will need for a while. (got to many guns to cycle thru before get back to these ). If you know someone in MB get them to send you some rounds out, not to hard to find around here.

On the topic of 7.62 x 54R.

I just (like, yesterday) was in touch with what used to be SIR Mailorder in Winnipeg. SIR is now answering the phone as Cabela's (?...it was a bad connection, but I repeated it to her that way). They are probably still listed on Canada 411 as SIR though.

They are expecting their shipment of Russian SKS in at the end of June or so (those are all spoken for) and they are expecting a shipment of 7.62 x 54R in at about the same time from Russia.

The nice lady allowed me to put in a pre-order for 2 boxes of 440 x 7.62 x 54R at the current catologue price of $124.99 each, plus taxes and shipping.:D Course, this depends on the final price, which may vary.

They are now using UPS for shipping. Apparently, CANPAR raised prices too much for them. Interesting part of this though is that UPS will not handle reloading powder or primers. Whole ammo, no problem.

Finally, she seemed surprised when I told her I had found them through CGN (one of the ads on top gives a list of dealers in different regions across Canada, I forget which. I blame Mefloquine).

edit to fix spelling...school was so long ago

Cabelas just made my "To-do" list on the way home from work tomorrow. I hope the counter-jockeys are just as nice, although I half expect to hear "7.62 Russian? Naw....no idea when its coming. Check back later."
