I still don't follow what you mean by saying "Not the way I would go" Unless you mean that you would not ever be dragged out of your tent by one of these brutes because you would take care of them before it happened??
Cause all I am saying is what I read, that these lions were big bastards, and the mounts had to be made smaller due to the skins not being fully intact.
Anywho.. Well I am only on page 85, I have already lost count on how many pages have been actually used in the movie. You would be surprised at how accurate the movie actually is. If you think the movie is way off, I'd suggest re-reading the book, and then re-watch the movie.
Off the top of my head from the book what actually happened so far up to page 85 that is shown in the movie:
The big Forman actually was pulled from his tent and killed. (Although in reality according to book, the lion yanked him out by the neck)
There really was a worker yanked out by his feet.
Patterson really did face the lion and had a misfire with a borrowed rifle (but the flushers were the workers themselves, not Remington and his special African hunters.
But the special African hunters were actually there, for a few days, and did leave Patterson alone. They came up with some other British officers that joined him for the hunt while on leave.
Patterson really did build that trap, and it really did work, having one of the lion's get caught in it. He really had (only two) workers in it for bait armed with martini rifles, and they really did freak out and shoot and miss the lion at point blank range. They shot one of the bars off the trap door, which allowed the lion to escape.
The owl really did buzz Patterson’s head that night, but he did not fall off of his scaffold (which he really built) almost did in reality. He really did get his first lion that night, as it stalked him he shot it through the heart from above while he was on the scaffold.
So I am not even half way through the book, and many of the scenes in the movie are directly out of the book! One should not be too critical of the movie for another important reason. The real time frame before Patterson actually killed the first lion takes place over many months. Those lions had already killed lots of workers. Hollywood had to put all this into a two hour show. I think they did a pretty damn good job. Yes Remington really did not exist, but so what, I enjoyed his character in the movie.
For example the worker revolt also really did happen, as there was a conspiracy to murder Patterson, and when they confronted him in the rock quarry, He managed to talk his way out of it. Now in a movie that would have just been plain boring. So when Remington in the movie came on the scene, well in my opinion that just made for great entertainment.
So in a nut shell I can confidently say that the movie did indeed come from more than just a few pages of the book.
SOME OTHER INFO ON PATTERSON,, HE WAS A ZIONIST! During WWI Commanded the Jewish Legion. WTF!
The Gallipoli front
Main articles: Battle of Gallipoli and Landing at Cape Helles
Cape Helles landing mapOn April 25, 1915, together with the first British, Australian, New Zealand and French troops, the Jewish Legion landed on Gallipoli peninsula. It was led by the Commander Lt. Colonel John Henry Patterson, DSO (of Irish Protestant origin) and was met with heavy shelling and machine gun fire at the shore of Cape Helles. Trumpeldor was the deputy commander; Jabotinsky served as an officer. There, a Distinguished Conduct Medal was awarded to Private M. Groushkowsky, who prevented his mules from stampeding under heavy bombardment and despite being wounded in both arms, delivered the ammunition. Trumpeldor was shot through the shoulder but refused to leave the battlefield. Patterson later wrote: "Many of the Zionists whom I thought somewhat lacking in courage showed themselves fearless to a degree when under heavy fire, while Captain Trumpeldor actually revelled in it, and the hotter it became the more he liked it..."[1]
