Just wondering how many people have bought a used shotgun from The Gun Dealer in McAdams, NB and how was it, compared to how it was described?

In mid- February I purchased a used Winchester Super-X Model 1 XTR Trap (late production) with I/M choked 30" barrel. It was described as "Very Good" condition. Upon delivery I found a gun that was in "Fair" condition The receiver was scratched, bluing worn, had a shell catcher permanently epoxied to it. The entire gas system was severely pitted with rust but cleaned up with a wire wheel to look better. The barrel was also pitted with rust at the muzzle and cold blued. The mag tube had been reversed (an old trick to save a few $$$ rather than replacing it) and the trigger assembly had been replaced with one from an earlier production SX1. One quick phone call and I was told that that shouldn't have happened and to send it back for full refund including return shipping. 3 weeks went by, no news. A few phone calls and a little arguing later I was finally refunded for the purchase and the original shipping but return shipping is still unaccounted for.

So today, I happen to be browsing their used gun section again and I see that same SX1 Trap #44702 is listed for sale again and once again described as "Very Good" condition!

I would like to know if this is typical of this business or possibly a genuine mistake? I can honestly say that either way, I will never deal with those folks again!

I've purchased one bolt action rifle from them. It was described as being in excellent condition. I had my doubts but bought it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised when the gun arrived. It appeared to have never been fired. So no issues for me. Sorry your experience wasn't as good as mine. Bac4

I've bought a few guns from them in the past , never had a problem, but a friend had some issues.
I think every now and then, just like car dealers, someone will have a bad day and the deal will not be good.
I had an issue with a dealer that is a sponsor here, and it was a very bad deal ( I was basically called a liar trying to deal off something other than described which could not be further from the truth) , but I have since bought a shotgun from them with no problem.

I have bought several firearms from them, new and used, and no problems. I do however, live only 5 hours away so I make the trip up in person 2-3 times a year, especially to stock up on ammo. Good people!

Their ratings, to me anyways, is good. I have been in the store fairly often (2 hour drive for me) and have handled a lot of their used guns. I find calling is hard to get through, and return emails is non existent. And you would think for a super small town, in literally the middle of no where, would have lots of time, they are chickens with their heads cut off running around, its surprisingly busy there! Stock is huge, (and I mean MASSIVE) I thought what they had showing was huge, nothing till I saw their storage behind. Bought a mossberg tactical 22, and went in the back to get it, from floor to ceiling shelves (id say 20 foot ceilings) of NIB guns. He must have had 100 of that model ( an exaggeration but I couldn't count!) and he said when I inquired about a ruger sr9 (that I ended up buying) he had over 40 in stock.

Anyways yes they seem a bit off to talk to, definitely maybe need a customer service class, but to me just good fair people to deal with (also check if you buy again, most items can get 10% off if you have a range membership almost anywhere). I looked for the item number and couldn't find it. did you mean 44704?? Anyways sucks that you didn't get what you expected, always crappy to get that kind of service, for me I like them, but for me I gave up calling or emailing, I just take a day and end up breaking the bank when I go!

I haven't personally had any bad dealings with them. The owner can be a hardass on many things, but in general it seems to have gotten much better over the past few years. Like it was said earlier, emails have about a 1 in 5 chance of being responded to and phone calls can be maddening during busy times, which it does get busy. I've never been in the store without there being at least 3 or 4 other people in plus the phone ringing every couple of minutes.

I have heard some horror stories locally on used gun conditions, but most of them occurred 10+ years ago. I have also heard rumours of people intentionally hiding flaws/defects when trading in used guns to intentionally screw the owner over for being such a hardass and not giving them the deal they wanted, but it seems like the son is taking over more and more, so that may account for the changes.

My husband and I have bought most of our stuff there. They can be hard to contact, but the owner and his son are both great guys.

I've never heard anyone refer to Ross as a "hardass..."

I have been dealing with The Gun Dealer and Ross personally for many years... I have bought 30 or so guns from TGD and they were all in "correctly described" condition.

If there is a problem, Ross has always taken care of it promptly. I once bought a set of Remington 1100 Sporting guns in 12/20/28/.410 gauges... the 28 arrived with a piece broken off the forearm (obviously crushed in shipping), without questioning or needing pictures, Ross offered to pay return shipping and have his gunsmith repair it, replace it with new, or send me the money to have it repaired locally... I chose the latter option and the payment arrived quickly.

I couldn't be happier with the service at TGD.

I must say that I REALLY like their website!
Easy to navigate and also its nice to be able to see a picture of the gun you want to buy without asking for them.

I have dealt with them several times, even returned a pistol once after a few weeks, and got full refund inc. shipping with no problem's...I dealt with Justin...

Ross is a very intense guy but not what I would call "hardass". He's always more than fair with me and I have bought guns, scopes, ammo and reloading stuff from them. They are a little behind the curve for timely communication and they are hard to reach by e-mail. But Ross is a man of his word. I bought a scope at a gun show which was supposed to come with rings and many months later I was in the store and reminded him and he went right over to the aisle and grabbed a set off the shelf and handed them to me with a smile and an apology. Great bunch down in Macadam IMHO.

Well thanks for all the feedback. Nice to hear that most of you got what you paid for and were satisfied with it.

I would have given them a second chance...but after seeing that SX1 relisted and described in a condition it is not, after all the problems where clearly pointed out to them, how can I trust them?!!

I'm going to second what Hoycannon & Soleman have said. I've dealt with Ross for a number of years, both personally and professionally and have rarely had an issue, and he steps up to fix it when there is one.

Contacted them a while back seeking info on a firearm they had.. guess I asked the wrong questions,as they had no interest in the communication department.

I have attempted to buy from them, online and over the phone, for over a year now, to no avail. Having an email within a website is useless, if no one monitors it. If they are as "big" as they say they are, they need a 1-800 number.

Pick up the phone... dial the number... ask for the gun counter... give them the stock number... give them your credit card & PAL number... done...

I have done it dozens of times... no problems... and you have been trying for over a year??? A year??? A year???
