The Holy Grail Debate

Question: What is YOUR perfect hunting rifle setup?

It seems like a few times a year over a few "sodas" we play the game and ask the question,

"If you could choose one hunting rifle to use exclusively for the rest of your life, what would it be?"

Sometimes it is a civil debate and sometimes it can get quite heated. So many factors change per person, per enviroment,
sentimental value, ammo availability, and straight up killing power of a cartridge. In BC I could have a chance at an Elk, Moose, Whitetail, Mulie, Black Bear, Coyote, Wolf, or Sasquatch all in a day, but don't move here you'd hate it. Swap that for someone who lives to chase long range deer in the coulees of Alberta and everything changes. Then there is our friend Anton who can't understand why we don't always choose SVT-40...

Sometimes the conversation will last a week because in the middle of the night a guy with a Remington Model Seven might have an epiphany and change his caliber of choice from .338 Fed to .280 Ackley but then he needs to change the gun/platform too!

So here on a snowy February Friday I want to ask you all,

What is THE gun?

You don't have to own it currently because what lunatic (other than your wife) would ask you to have only ONE gun?

Let it begin!

I got no picture to share but my "one gun" is and always will be my Dad's trusty no1 shtle 3* , .303 british
It's really the only rifle in my collection that is "priceless" to me and I won't part with it till I'm dead
I don't hunt with it exclusively but it always answers the call when required ;)

RGT Nick here!

I will start it off!

This year I have decided to make the gun mentioned above.

I'm taking an older Remington Model Seven and having International Barrels (IBI) make a .338 Fed(Reamer on the way and will be the first they produce!) with 19" 1-10 Twist and as light a contour they can produce without sucking. I've decided to put a Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36 with standard duplex reticle on it. A lightweight and compact scope, that looks pretty on top of the rifle. I am unsure if I want to have a Wildcat Customs stock built for it yet but that may come.

I chose this build planning to use Federal Premiums .338 Fed 200gr Trophy Bonded Tip with the following on the box data. Will need to crono and test when barrel is finished.

Trajectory
50 Y 100 Y 200 Y 300 Y 400 Y 500 Y
1 2.2 0 -9.2 -26.3 -53.6

Energy in Foot Pounds
Muzzle 100 Y 200 Y 300 Y 400 Y 500 Y
3071 2625 2231 1884 1581 1321

Personally I do a lot of pack hunting where size and weight play a huge factor in my rifle choice. Also my average kill distance is 60m-100m but would be comfortable shooting this package to 350m.

My favorite rifle in my collection is the Custom Model Seven in 358 Win. that was previously owned by a dear friend that is no longer with us. I love this rifle dearly but I find the 358 limits my comfort level with range.

So on Friday Feb. 22nd 2019 this is my Holy Grail... that will change tomorrow...

Good thing I can own more than one!

Aw C'mon

What a bunch of Fudds

How about a 30 round mag AR with co witnessed flip up irons and a red dot like I ran with naked and unafraid in the 80s?

Out of what I own this is it:

Reasons:

I put a LAW Folder on it so it fits on my pack perfectly and therefore does not get caught on blow down. Light enough & accurate. BUIS off set are quick go to if quick close shot is required.

Soon to own:

One that will soon be mine that I think would be my "one rifle" is a Christensen Arms Modern Precision Rifle with a 16.5" barrel (in .300 WSM) For all reasons stated above but bolt action, greater accuracy and similar weight.

For me a unicorn has to have a butter smooth action. It has to withstand weather without needing to be buffed and polished constantly. It would be light weight, 7lbs or less without optics. Barrel length no longer than 18". It has to balance well. Detachable magazine that holds min 5 rnds. Capable of taking big game up to 500yds. And finally, of course a single set trigger is a must have

Tikka T3x Stainless Steel in 300 Win Mag
Topped with a Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44mm with the windplex reticle
Ordered the rifle, just waiting on $$$ for the scope

I have bought quite a few, sold less. One i sold was apparently a lot of peoples unicorn gun. My inbox got swamped, 30+ messages and i will take its in 2 hours. I sold it to the first guy, his pm was 4 mins from my posting.

Remington 600 350 rem mag, with the multi colored laminate stock. One mark about the size of a grain of rice.

Hey Rob, cool looking rifle!...:) Can you please explain the animals on the stock? Pronghorn, hog, deer and fox? What make is that rifle? What caliber?

What are you using to mark the kills on the stock? Looks very neat, thank you for sharing!.....:)

I believe in the right tool for the job BUT if I had to choose one general rifle it would be my tikka battue lite.
I have a leupold 2-7 in a masi one piece mount(qd)
Atlasworxs aics bottom metal(came in today, it’s this weekend project)
Trigger spring kit.
It’s short, light, accurate and the action is smooth enough to keep me smiling.
