The last shot of the day ...

Ok, I just got back from a grouse hunt up north and the weather was pretty wet ... rain ... rain ... and more rain.

So, after a day out in the rain I like to wipe the gun dry ... wipe it with a oiled rag and pass an oiled patch through the barrel before I put the gun away for the day ... and all that to prevent corrosion. But on some days I was just tooooo tired to get my cleaning rod and patches out ... etc. .. :-(

So, I was wondering ... wouldn't it be nice and convenient ... at the end of the day ... if I could just load a cartridge ... and shoot an oiled peace of cloth through the barrel and into the air ... and in order to drive the water out and oil the inside of that barrel. That would be easy and effortless .... right? The last shot of the day ... !!

Does anything like this exist? If yes, where can I buy it?
And if not, what is the reloading recipe for it? I mean just the primer without any powder can probably push an oiled piece of cloth trough the barrel .... right? I am talking 12ga ...

And if I am totally dreaming .... oh well, ok just tell me ... ;)
But then, maybe there is a market niche .... who would appreciate that sort of convenience?

Thanks in advance for the input ...

Just the job for a 12 gauge bore snake, clean it regularly. Someone will be along shortly to proclaim the muzzle wear that will occur, to that i say if you cant hold one strait in a 12 gauge god help you!

Well, the only flaw I see is that the oiled patch is shot out first and then the burning powder and gasses ar the last to eascape.
So, the oil would be burned off by said burning powder and gases.
Relax, it's a shot gun and takes but a moment to run a bore snake through the action and barrel.
Or you can leave it till you get home, just unzip the case a little to let the moisture escape .

I like the concept, but unless you made the hull out of oiled cloth as well, wouldn't you still need to wipe down the chamber? That, and it does nothing for the action itself.

Ok, so I loaded a couple of "Last shot of the day!" rounds for my 12ga as an experiment.

The recipe goes like this:

1.) Fiocchi 12ga 2.75 with Fiocchi primer (and I guess you could use any hull/primer combination)
2.) X12X gas seal
3.) a piece of cotton cloth soaked in gun oil (I used Ballistol)
4.) Over shot card
5.) Fold crimp

And as you can see there is no powder in the recipe. :)
Just the primer ....

So I shot this load today .... and it made a not too loud "bloub" and the oiled cotten cloth came out of the barrel and landed around 8 meters (yards) in front of me. Then I checked the barrel .... and yups ... it was nicely oiled.

Proof of concept --> Success!!
I am happy ....

Ha ha ha - awesome.

Why not just have a 45 gallon drum of diesel at home and store it in that....you wouldn't have to worry about oiling and corrosion then....easy peesey.
