The capabilities of the 6.5x55 have been discussed before on this thread.
Although it wouldn't be my own calibre of choice for this particular game have a look at this pic......

Yep, that's right.
It's a sporterised M96 with a synth stock and scope.
The shooter lived in the Northern Territory for a while and it was his main rifle.
He took a number of buffs with it using spine shots and also knocked over countless wild donkeys which are renowned for being tough animals to kill.
I might add that most of his game was taken with the fairly anaemic factory ammo available for the Swede.
I'd say Bell would be proud....wouldn't you?:)

hell of a good round, extremely under rated and under appreciated

moderate velocity and high sectional density do wonderful things :dancingbanana:

I concur. Also, let's not forget the fact that this cartridge is inherently accurate. The more I shoot, see others shoot, and read about the 6.5 x 55, the more I have to conclude that there is something really special about this cartridge.

And to think it was developed a full decade before the Wright Brothers' flight...

Here's what the shooter said about taking this particular bull:

I was using Remington Core Lokt 140 grn in her. Shot to the same point of aim as PMC, as i wasn't reloading at that stage and was building my brass stocks, The first shot went through his chest from a rear angle (just behind the shoulder) at 150mtrs and made it to the hide on the other side going through around 16inches of muscle both sides of the rib cage and the heart/lungs. he ran for around 100mtrs and then i hit him in the spine he was dead when i reached him.

A 140gn with 16" of penetrations through heavy muscle and tissue!
I think your comment about the inherrent accuracy is completely true.
In fact I think that the 3 big Mauser cals, 8x57, 7x57 & 6.5x55 are all inherrently accurate although the 6.5 with it's superior ballistic coefficient does seem to be the pick of the bunch for penetration.

I've seen a pic of an Indian lady who killed a large grizzly with a .22, whats your point? Not to be disagreeable but how far would that poor buff have run if he didn't fish out the spine shot.

Judging by the amount of blood coming out of its nose I'd say he got it through at least one lung, it wasn't long for this world. I think the spine shot probably saved him some effort in retrieving the meat though.

is their any new rifles in that cal?? like a remington or tikka?

You might want to check this one out:

"The 6.5mm Grendel cartridge with a claimed effective range of 1000-1200 yds* using a 123gr bullet.

It can be fired in a standard-sized AR action rifle, and stagger-loaded in a standard-sized AR magazine."

NATO is looking at adopting a 6.8mm cartridge.

Only some, that thing is no small piece of meat! the only way to truly save effort would be not to shoot it :) my back gets sore just looking at that beast.

The 6.5x55 is still the most popular hunting calibre in the Scandinavian countries and puts moose down like its nobodys business. I've never owned one but now that the GF has her hunting license it gives me a good reason to go out and buy another rifle, I was thinking 7-08 but it may just end up being the 6.5x55.

Wonder if the fella that wondered was the 6.5 x 55 "enough" for our
"Big" Canadian Moose ( as opposed to the "tiny" Scandanavian ones )
is looking on ???

Indeed! :D

First time I shot my Swede Mauser I couldn't believe the accuracy, and smooth handling, what a gem. :)

And to think I saved her just a few hours from being bought by some Bubba who wanted to sportsterize her.
