So I find myself drawn to the non-restricted side of firarms. I have always had a genuine interest in history and my new hobby into shooting has a side hobby regarding the potential collection of these historical pieces.

Im not interested in investing huge dollars into official collector status units, just one of each selection that i can have a piece of.

Currently an SKS is in the cabinet; i have a Mosin on order from Westrifle; and i find myself eyeing an SVT-40.

The question is: what other interesting un-restricted historical pieces would one consider?

thanks

For WW2 stuff, I would recommend: K98k, Lee Enfields No.1MkIII and No.4Mk1, M1 Garand, M1903A3 springfield, Arisaka Type 99, Carcano M41, VZ24, Red-banded M1917 with C-broad arrows, MAS36 with an m serial suffix or earlier.

Maybe add in a K31, they're actually very nice compared to a lot of milsurp stuff, lots of different types of mausers

The centennial of the outbreak of the First World War is at hand: only 11 months away.

Some of the weapons used even by the major players still are inexpensive. REALLY good Carcanos still are about half the price of a decent Lee-Enfield, a quarter the price of a Springfield. Most Finn Moisin-Nagants are leftovers from before the Revolution and some of them can really shoot. A decent Gewehr 98 is about the same money as a good 98k. Vetterlis are still a drug on the market; last one I bought cost me $225..... for a Short rifle, rebuilt to "new" in 1938: pretty old thing, built 1892.

Most of them are handloading propositions, but that just makes it more fun and a LOT cheaper.

Worth thinking about.

When the Centennial awareness creeps a bit closer, I think prices will go UP dramatically, so get 'em now.

I think the above posts have summed it up nicely.

The biggest problem with collecting milsurps is it's an ADDICTION!!

OP, don't say nobody warned you!!!:):)

Every time I think of the centennial, I get tempted to take down my EE ad for my Gew88 and wait another 12 months... lol. Everything from Berthiers to early Carcanos are due for a price jump IMHO.

Check out TradeEx, in their Military Rifle section.
Good people to deal with, and any milsurp I recieved from them, was cosmo- free.

Don't ever buy a Ross, they're just to damn amaz.... horrible to only have one... I mean, to even have one. Terrible rifles. Send them all to me if you find any.

In other news, Ross Rifles rock and you should buy several. Very fun, and quite accurate too. Made in Canada is also a nice touch.

An old Lee Enfield is a must. But if you're looking history wise try to find an old 41 Swiss. I know there are a lot of people on here that can help you out with information on creating ammunition for them (casting the bullets and forming the brass, etc.) and with some of the hangups you can expect to encounter (feeding difficulties and the like). Hope you have fun creating you're collection!
