I am looking for a very accurate .22 LR for under $1000.00. I am looking for accuracy and something I can mount a scope on. I want to use it for plinking and cheap practice.

Is 1 MOA with a .22 LR too much to ask for?

What would you guys suggest? I could be open to .22 magnum or 17 hmr.

I'd say a Savage MKIIBV with Accutrigger....or any Savage MKII Accutrigger with a bull barrel, your choice of blued or stainless, laminated or sythetic or thumbhole stock. Won't cost anywhere close to $1000, BTW.

My MKIIF, tapered barrel with synthetic stock, shoots Winchester Dynapoints into 1.25 inch 5 shot groups at 100 meters on a calm day, about equal to my CZ452 Varmint with same ammo. I've done sub 1 inch groups but they are the rare exception. A decent scope like the Bushnell Banner 4-12X x 40AO has good enough glass and a fine enough reticle to allow one to extract best accuracy from the Savage or CZ.

I haven't tried the more expensive target grade ammo because I shoot 22s for economy, and target ammo will defeat my purpose.

Check this link. Reviewer got a .4 inch group at 100 with Federal Gold Medal Target 40 grainers. That is .4 minute of angle.

It sounds to me that you are looking for two different things. A benchrest and a plinker rifle. If you want a decent .22 the Remington model 5, if you can find one, will run you about $400.00 new and you can get a 2 inch group at a 100m with cheap ammo, American Eagle. That is a plinker type rifle. A benchrest rifle is a custom target rifle. Collector's Source has a couple of Anshutzs for sale, used, for about $900.00. This more like a benchrest rifle. Both of these rifles have a European dovetail on the receivers so mounting a scope is fairly easy. Both of these rifles are capable of one hole groups out to 50m with aperature sights. Do some research and spend your hard earned money wisely.

Not exactly.

I am looking for the most accurate .22 LR for under $1000.00 that you can easily mount a scope on.

I have been looking at CZ and Savage rifles. I was curious what else was out there.

I didn't know you could mount a scope easily on an Anshutz. I always thought those were iron's only.

See I am learning somthing already. ;)

Look no further. BEST BANG for your bucks is the Savage model93 or mark2 heavy barrel with accu-trigger for under $500 and very easy to mount scope on it.

CHEERS

Sako Quad - get a .22LR and when you decide later you want to have different calibers get a new barrel or you can just all 4 calibers.... Mounting a scope is a snap with the standard 11mm dovetail base and it is very accurate.

Lots of really good, accurate 22's for under $1000. Love the CZ's and Sakos. Savage can shoot well too. However, I think the Anshutz 64 will consistently outshoot even those fine rifles. They can still be had for just under $1000.

The more I research the more I think I will go for an Anshutz 64.

I have an old Mossberg 146BA that I got for around 200. It has a 26" barrel, and rear aperature sights. My vision isn't what it used to be, so I had to scope it. BUT, before I scoped it, I had my friend use it (he's a serious competition rimfire shooter) and he said it was one of the most accurate rifles he's used. I , of course, put a 6-24x scope on it, and its shooting groups of .75" at 100 yards with ease. I just included this info to say that there are lots of good shooting irons out there, many of them are old too. Just don't discount a great quality used older gun. The quality of guns from the 50's and 60's was so good. People took pride in saying "I work at SO and So gun manufacturing". People had mad skills back then. Plus, I like the fact that the tube mag holds 20 long rifle rounds.

If you can find one, a Lakefield 91T or 91TR is a great bang for the buck. Mine shoots a ragged hole with bulk ammo at 50 yards using the Lyman aperture sights. I have not bothered scoping it yet but the receiver is grooved. Best part is that the rifle with sights can usually be had for $350. Believe me, it's worth every penny.

If it's all about accuracy, and you care less about looks (per-se) I would recommend a used CIL 190 (Anschütz Model 64 barreled action). These guns will shoot "one-hole" groups at 50 yards and last for eternity (that might be an exaggeration, the eternity bit).

Also, find yourself a brick of SK - Standard Plus ammo (a Lapua product - http://www.lapua-gmbh.de/naviEN.html), which will cost about $58-60 after tax for 500rnds and considered by many to be among the best quality ammo in the world. It's certainly winning matches.

It's important to note that generally, the accepted average for .22LR ammo accuracy is about 1.25MOA - though some will argue that Eley Match and Lapua's new X-Act buck that trend by a small margin.

My 2¢

If it's accuracy and not looks you're after, you can pick up an old Mossberg 44 US for under $200 complete with sights and shoot ragged holes at 50 yds all day with decent ammo. These rifles were made with heavy barrels, very good peep sights / some came with low power scopes and were excellent rifles.

Another vote for the Anschutz 64, I bought a used CIL 310 the trigger alone is worth the little extra you pay, fully adjustable sear, weight and overtravel. Far better than the CZ trigger even with the trigger kit for there is no overtravel adjustment with the CZ. Have a 46b Mossberg with the peep sights which shoots great but again the trigger is not the best and no scope rails on these old ones. Paid around 400 for the 310 which is the repeater with clip.

Another plug for the Anschutz. if you can find a used 310 its takes the anschutz magazines, which are easy to find, is a relatively cheap gun. Weatherby is also using the 64 action in their new rimfire and they can be found for $800. CZ 452 is a great shooting rifle and you can buy it in stainless and synthetic, accurate but not super accurate. If you want to just try an anschutz 64 action at 1/2 your budget check your pms. You can mount rings on anschutz, talley makes them for about $55 and they are great hardware. Savages also are very accurate but they do give up a little to the Sako's and Anschutz, not much to the CZ.
