My boy is 7.5 years old and he has been shooting for a few years now - a Savage Cub. He has been itching to step up from a single shot and has talked quite a bit about an "upgrade". He has also been saving his money - pretty much every dollar he has received from Grandparents, Great Grandmother etc for his birthday and Christmas presents for about two years now.

He usually comes with me to the local gun shop and something really caught his eye about 2 weeks ago. Ever since then he has mentioned it every few days. We had long conversations about saving money and about buying things. He really wanted to go back to the shop to take another look. So back we went, and we had his little envelope of money.

We got to the shop and he just stood there looking at the gun rack. The fellow behind the counter - someone we had dealt with quite a few times - asked if he could help. My boy's response was, "I have my eye on that one". He had another look and we had another talk - are you sure you are interested? You know that you will have absolutely no money left, right? "After some thought he said, "yes". So with some prompting he explained that he had some money, but not quite enough. "What's the best you can do?"

Well, the fellow behind the counter did some figuring and gave us a price. My boy and I had another talk. He was certain - he wanted this particular rifle. He didn't want a different one. He didn't want to save the money. He wanted this one.

So he went up to the counter, said "we have a deal" and shook hands. That's where I came in, coughing up the extra dough - the boy's money was a bit shy of the amount needed.

The boy is very, very happy indeed. We got home and brought the box in. He was very excited to open the box and show his mother. We fondled the rifle for some time and then put it into the safe.

It was a great experience for me and I hope that you fathers and mothers can have a similar experience with your kids.

Oh yes....

I almost forgot....

How could I end this post.....

Loved the story, and your son has very good taste in firearms. I'm sure that rifle will see many great times with him, as you will too. Is that a Browning BL22 grade II with maple stocks?

Yes - Grade II with maple stocks. I have to say it is a mighty fine looking little rifle. The pictures don't do the stock justice.

Great story and great taste. Best of all, I'm sure you both will make great memories shooting that new "upgrade". Thanks for sharing. Growing up, I heard the opposite - "you want a bb gun? Those things kill people!" Needless to say, I loved Air Cadets and their shooting program :). It's nice to hear about a Dad sharing his hobby with his son, so great!

Wow. Your son has exquisite taste in firearms. He will not be disappointed with that purchase and I know that while it may be his "first" purchased rifle, it will be a lifelong companion.

I had one for 4 years, and it was an awesome little gun. Didn't sell it, I gave it to my nephew. His parents (my sister) split up and she moved back to NFLD with the 2 kids. She doesn't have much money and he is an avid little outdoorsman. I imagine your kids smile was similar to my nephews. Great story. Your boy has awesome taste. You are an awesome Dad!!

That takes me back to when my kids were little... good job for your son to speak up and deal with the sales person himself... and that is a dandy "keeper" rifle.

Congrats to you for raising your boy well!!!

And CONGRATS to your boy for picking such a nice rifle!!!

Cheers
Jay

And to think in the US what you discribed is called a straw purchase. I was 16 when me and dad did the same thing after a summer of baling hay and hoeing Xmas trees for a model 94 30-30. Guy at work couldn't understand why its 41 years old and hasn't a scratch on it yet. Nice to see somebody is helping out the kids get into shooting still.

I have given either a rimfire repeater or a single barrelled shotgun to 6 different kids now.(none of them mine, but belonging to friends who weren't gun owners/shooters, but didn't have any objections to the kids shooting) Four of them still shoot all the time, one will go if "prompted" by me that he needs to go hunting, and one just found that she liked music better...........so I "repatriated" the winchester for another kid and gave her a guitar. All 6 kids are happy. They sure have a good sense of responsibility, and respect. I love the fact that their parents aren't so closed minded that they stifle the kids ventures. Just because THEY don't own guns, they didn't feel the need to overprotect their own kids. The OP should have MORE kids. He is the type of Dad that I like. He fosters great relationships with his kids, allows them to think for themselves, and supports what they want to do. His kids are very lucky.
