OK, folks - just got my new M14S from Rodger at Dark. It arrived in all its greasy glory. My first reflex was to tear it apart to do some degreasing, but I am utterly stymied by the trigger guard. How much force should it take to pivot it out? I grab onto it as per tradition, and try to pull it back and up (top of rifle pointed at ground), but it appears the stock is in the way of the trigger guard's movement to the rear.

So what am I doing wrong? Is there some sort of technique involved here, or am I just applying insufficient force? I'm pulling hard enough to strain myself, and getting absolutely nowhere.

This is the way the rifle was designed, but I have ruined the odd round with tight trigger guards.

A screw driver or the chaft on the combo tool is easiest.

Yeah you definately don't want to use the same round over and over.

I still prefer this method to the combo tool.
 
Word of caution: when you degrease, remember after to RE-GREASE. These girls run internally on grease, not oil, on the bearing surfaces. There should be several threads on cleaning and where you should apply grease. But don't grease the piston. :)

Yeah, I believe the trigger guard will #### the hammer if it isn't already. I'm pretty impressed with how easily these things field strip. Just took mine appart today for the first time.
 
Thanks again, guys. I've stripped 'er as far as I can without the gas wrench or flash hider pliers. Guess I'd better get on Brownells for those. Als reckon I need some grease. She's dry right now, but I won't shoot 'er that way.

open your rear hatch- it's in the back of the stock and get out your cleaning kit- swing the butplate into the upright position and you'll see the door- now drawout the cleaning rod, oiler and handle- look on the end of the handle to that funny looking hex - THAT'S YOUR GAS PLUG WRENCH- OTHER THAN THAT IT'S A 3/8THS- the m14 comes with everything you need to maintain in that rear compartment- it's up to you if you want to improve on it or not- granted the norc i have didn't come with a CHAMBER BRUSH, but a 45 cal will also work if you don't have/can't get- just rake a piece of aluminum rod and drill a 8x32 hole in the side so you have a 90 degree cleaning tool- it's nit as nice as the ratchets, but will get the job done
