I'm gonna get off the promo loads for a while and buy a bunch of flats of one of the more premium shells to build a good cache of hulls for next year.

If you had to pick one brand of hull as your only hull for reloading what hull would you pick??? (STS/AA/GC/Cheddite, etc...)

How many loading would you expect out of your chosen hull???

What are you paying for hulls?????

or what are you paying for a case of shells to attain the hulls???

(I load everythign from 7/8oz cream puff skeet loads to 1 1/8oz handicap super-smacker loads. All loaded on a MEC 9000H. To be shot out of a 525 sporting/AA Silver II/870 Special Trap, and whatever new auto I pick up in the near future.)

Once my cache of older, one-piece Winchester AA hulls is exhausted I"ll be switching to Remington STS. I've loaded them before and they've lasted 10 reloads without a problem.

Paying for once fired hulls is something I've never done and instead buy factory and save the hulls.

Cheddites load decently as well but they are a two-piece hull and I'm wary about multiple loadings although they appear solidly constructed. After two or three times they are usually dumped. FYI, if you are thinking about loading Cheddite hulls from Kent take note that their All Purpose load uses a 6 point crimp while the Velocity sporting uses 8.

I also have a supply of Federal Gold Medal which I've loaded but the difference in hull lengths means I have to adjust the loader from the settings for Winchester AA. It's preferable to find on hull and stick with it.

I'm still sittin' on about 20,000 red AA's and about 5,000 silver ones... so am in the same sort of boat as Claybuster.

Have found the Fed.GM's and Remington STS both to be very good in MEC and P/W loaders. Each press requires a little adjustment and fine tuning to switchover from AA's to something else. Was not at all happy with Challenger empties for reloading, but did find Kent & Fiocchi both to be satisfactory.

The Federal's seem to need a complete switchover to Federal or CB-Federal replacement wads to get the best out of them - just not happy with the result of using the AA type component wads in a straight wall case. Had very good results with them when using a fairly stiff load of Alliant Promo Powder, which I find quite similar in characteristic to Red Dot.

The STS's do just fine on AA or CB-AA replacements. No problem getting
+/- 10 loads out of each. They seem to be pretty dismal if you try and stretch it to 15 or so however. If you can find a good, steady supply, the "green" Remington 1 oz. target load wads, these seem to work exceptionally well in the STS hulls. Mix it up with a few boxes of the Gold Nitro Handicap loads if you go the STS route. As "empties", I would reload them with say 1-1/8 1200 7-1/2's as an easy means to distinguish them from normal 1 oz. load of 8's ( I do that now with the red & silver AA's. - those extra long Sporting Targets and rabbits seem to respond better to the heavier 7-1/2's ! ... they seem to work better back of the 23 yard line for Handicap too ! )

In 12ga & 20ga the Remington hulls are by far the best on the market today. You dont have to buy preminum ammo though to get a good hull. The Rem. Gun Club and Game Load hulls are basicly the same as the Nitro and STS hulls. The only real diffeence being the later have a brass base while GC and GL hulls have a steel base. They both will load hassle free for 7-10 loads. The new AA's are also a decent hull (not as good as the old one's)but have given some reloaders problem with them squashing. I dont have a problem with them and can run Rem's, AA , Fed's all through my press's with little or no adjustment to them. In 28ga and .410 the Win. AA HS hulls have proven to be the best I've found. I've had some HS .410 hulls last me up to 15 reloads. I keep on hand all the different Rem hulls and both red and silver AA's. This allows me to colour code my different loads to a certain hull and not have to worry about what is loaded in a certain box of shells.

Agreed on the Federals. I use the Federal SO wad with the Federal hulls but have to adjust the crimp and finishing dies on my loader.

Odd that you would have problems with Challenger hulls and not with Kent. They are both Cheddite hulls and as far as I can see identical except for the colour.

Thats what I was hoping to hear...:D :D :D

I still have a tub full of RXP's and a tub of Blue Magics (No, I'm not that old, but my Dad is:D :D ) that I think are going to get retired if I can find a good price on Gun Clubs or Game Loads.

Thanks
